39-35 North Girls Win
In SEAIS All-Star Game
By Joe Hiett
Led by Westfield’s Sandy
Hudson and Stratford
Academy’s Susan Peake, the
North SEAIS All-Star girls
snapped a 33-33 deadlock in
the final quarter to beat their
Southern opponents 39-35 last
Friday night in the 2nd
Annual All-Star Games held
at Westfield. The North boys
were not so fortunate,
however, losing to the South
boys 84-64.
In the girls game, both
teams were visibly tight and
neither scored until Susan
Peake’s free throw put the
North ahead 1-6 with 5:26
remaining in the first
quarter. Fullington’s Gayle
Bowen then canned a set shot
to put the South girls ahead
2-1. Sandy Hudson gave the
North the lead back with a 7
footer with 4:37 remaining to
make the score 3-2. Susan
Peake scored four more
points in the quarter but the
South behind Crisp
Academy’s Debbie
McKinney scored seven
markers to hold a 9-7 first
quarter lead.
Tri-County’s Vickie
McGraw bombed one home
to start the second quarter
and knot the score 9-9.

the trend and put the South
ahead 13-11. A rather erratic
periodof about two minutes
followed, punctuated only by
fine defense by Stratford’s
Susan King. With only 2:52
left in the first half, the South
led 14-12.
f Susan Peake took personal
charge of the ball game at
this point. The talented
lassie from Stratford canned
a charity toss to make the
score 14-13 in favor of the
South. Thirteen seconds
later Peake hit another free
throw to tie the score 14-14.
Peake continued her point
barrage with 1:55 left before
intermission by putting up a
missed teammate’s shot to
make the lights flash 16-14 in
favor of the North.
Connie Coley’s two free
throws knotted the score at
16-16 before Sandy Hudson
drilled in a field goal with 40
seconds left to make the
score 18-16. Vickie McGraw
then hit a onehander with 3
seconds left to make the
halftime score read 20-16 in
favor of the North.
In the third quarter Sandy
Hudson and Susan Peake
kept the North ahead and
they led 28-25 at the quarter’s
k close.
Patricia Cross opened the
final stanza with a set shot
from the right side to narrow
the North lead to 1 point 28-
27. Susan Peake’s driving
layup upped the lead to three
again, 30-27. Cross quickly
hit two more outside shots
and with 3:21 left to play the
score was tied 31-31.
The capacity crowd
viewing the contest saw
Westfield’s Sandy Hudson
display courage under fire
by personally giving the
North girls the lead. Several
other North girls let the
pressure bother their play
but Hudson kept her cool and
fired through a one-hander
from the left side to give the
North a 33-31 lead with 2:44
left to play. Connie Coley’s
two charity tosses tied the
score at 33-33 with 2:41 left.
Nathaniel Greene’s Leslie
Glass got her only two points
of the night with 2:25 left to
put the North ahead again 35-
33. The North got the ball
again and Fullington’s Gayle
Bow'en desperately fouled
Hudson with 1:55 remaining.
Sandy canned one free throw
to make the score read 36-33
in favor of the North.
Stratford’s Susan Peake
fouled Kay Lastinger of
Brooks Christian but
Lastinger missed her free
throw with 1:18 left. Peake
was called for traveling with
1:10 left but the South could
not convert their chance and
Sandy Hudson helped ice the
game with 1:05 left with a
pair of charity tosses to
make the lights flash 38-33.
With 19 seconds left Crisp’s
Debbie McKinney cut the
North lead to three points,
38-35, by netting a pair of foul
shots. Stratford’s Susan King
converted a free throw with
16 seconds remaining to
make the score 39-35. That
was how the game ended.
Susan Peake led North
scoring with 16 points
followed by Sandy Hudson
with 11. Hudson had 5 of her
11 tallies in the last 2:44 of
the game. Other North
scoring had Vickie McGraw -
6; Connie Williford-3; Leslie
Glass- 2; and Susan King -1.
Stratford’s Susan King and
Westfield’s Wanda Bragg
spearheaded the tough North
defense.

Houston and the North’s
Joey Claxton put on a per
sonal scoring duel. In the
second half, the South woke
up late in the third quarter to
blitze their opponents behind
John Bowen and Carter
Edwards.
Going into the foray, the
South was listed as a 20 point
favorite. But the North
evidently failed to realize
they were underdogs as they
stayed close for three
quarters. The main architect
of the North’s valiant fight
was Stratford’s Joey Claxton
who sizzled the nets for 18
first half points. In the final
half Claxton tired and the
North chances went down
the drain.
Out dueling Claxton was
the South’s big gun, Scott
Houston from Southwest
Georgia. The lanky center,
listed at 6’4” but actually
looking about 6’7” was a
scoring machine in the first
half as he worked the
baselines for 25 first half
points.
The contest started off
quickly with John Bowen of
Terrell Academy putting the
South on the scoreboard just
2-0 with 7:31 left in the first
quarter. Claxton’s two free
throws tied the score at 2-2
before Scott Houston got his
first two points with 7:01
still left. Claxton and
Houston continued to swap
scores until with 3:37
remaining in the first
quarter the score was tied 10-
10.
Houston went outside and
hit from the top of the circle
to make the lights flash 12-10.
After a Bubba Redding free
throw Houston hit from the
left side with 2:25 left to up
the count to 15-10. Redding’s
jumper from the left side
made the South lead by 7,17-
10 before Tony Albritton of
Beechwood netted two
charity tosses to cut the gap
to 5, 17-12 and break a 1:50
scoring drought for the
North. With 8 seconds left in
the first quarter the gap was
still 5 at 17-12 but the
fireworks were just starting.
Stratford’s Joey Claxton
netted 2 free throws then
stole the inbounds pass and
was fouled. Claxton hit
another foul shot and at the
end of the first quarter the
South led 17-15.
Kenny Cato of Nathaniel

Greene tied the game at 17-17
as the 2nd stanza started.
Claxton scored the North’s
next four points and they led
21-20 with 6:50 left before
intermission. Glenn Floyd of
Twiggs Academy hit 2 free
throws and the North led 23-
20.
Scott Houston of the South
again assumed dominance of
the game as in the next 6
minutes he bucketed 14
points. His turn around jum
per sliced the lead to 23-22
and a jumper a few seconds
later tied the score at 24-24
with 5:28 left. Claxton
popped one in to put the
North back out front 26-24
but Houston tied it at 26-26
with a pair of charity tosses.
Stratford’s Freddy
Danields put the North
ahead 27-26 with a free throw
for their last lead of the
game. John Bowen from
Terrell put up an offensive
rebound with 4:00 left before
intermission to put the South
ahead 28-27.
Houston scored 8 more
before the quarter ended and
the South held a 40-33 half-

time lead. At half-time
Houston had 25 points on 9
fieldgoals and 7 of 8 free
throws. Claxton had 18 points
on 6 fieldgoals and 6 of 9 free
throws.
In the 3rd quarter a game
effecting controversy oc
curred. Scott Houston
committed his fifth foul with
1:44 left in the third period
and the South leading 54-49.
However the South bench
had Houston with only 4
personals. South coach
Wayne Proffitt later termed
the incident an aid to his
team. He said,“lt fired us up
and we proved we were not a
one man team.”
Houston left the game with
27 points. John Bowen,
Bubba Redding, and Carter
Edwards picked up the slack
and increased the South
lead. By the end of the 3rd
quarter the South led 59-51.
Behind Bowen and Ed
wards the Southerners I
quickly upped their margin a
to 14,67-53 with 5:49 left to f
play. The two teams traded s
scores for about three -
minutes and the South led 71-
58 with 2:45 left to play.
At this point the South
blitzed for 9 points to take the
lead at 80-62. Edwin Blewith
from Raven wood scored 5
points in the last few minutes
and as the gun went off the
South led 84-64.
