School Board Adopts
New Dress Codes Here
The Houston County Board
of Education voted
unanimously last week to
adopt a dress code for the
1972-1973 school term. The
code was recommended by
junior and senior high school
principals in the system.
Supt. David A. Perdue said
the dress code is very liberal
and that he doesn’t think
there will be any trouble. He
said no specific hair length
has been set.
Fads and styles in dress
and in behavior which differ
extremely from con
ventional standards will not
be accepted. The code states
that proper attire for girls
will be conventional street
clothes worn in a con
ventional manner, and that
pants suits may be con
sidered conventional dress.
It specifies that full length
jumpsuits that are tailored
to be neat are appropriate,
but that those of material or
style that causes them to
resemble lounge wear or
pajamas are not acceptable.
Slacks with blouses or
sweaters that are neat and
not too tight or form-fitting
are also acceptable.
Forbidden are bare
midriffs, sweatshirts, harem
pants, hip buggers, shorts of
any type, scooter skirts,
pedal pushers, backless
blouses and dresses in
cluding halter tops, blouses
and dresses of strapless style
and'the like are forbidden.
The code specifies that
undergarments which affect
the proper appearance of
young ladies shall be worn at
all times.
Too-tight pants suits or
jumpsuits are not ac
ceptable, and extremes in
style, colors and patterns or
fabric are to be avoided.
Boys are required to wear
their shirttails tucked inside
their pants with a few ex
ceptions. Shirt-jacs and
banlon shirts may be worn
outside so long as they do npt
exceed two inches below the
belt in length.
Tank shirts are not per
mitted; neither are un
dershirts usually worn as
undergarments allowed
without shirts. No writing
except authorized emblems
will be permitted on gar-

merits.
Hats, caps, combs or
picks will not be worn inside
the school buildings. Belts
must be kept buckled. Shoes
or sandals will be worn at all
times.
Mustaches, goatees or
beards of any kind are
prohibited. Sideburns will be
permitted to the ear lobe but
not below.
No exact rule regarding
hair length was set, but
principals strongly
recommended that parents
recognized the need for sons
to be neatly groomed. They
recommend that the hair be
cut to a “reasonable length,”
kept out of the eyes and
cleaned often. They said the
health and safety im
plications of long hair should
be considered at all times.
Board member Bill
George said, “WeTe going to
back the principals all the
way. They have us way out
on a limb, and I hope nobody
saws it off.”
