Astros Whip Cubs In
‘B ’ Loop Showdown 7-4
Two previously undefeated
Perry B teams, the Astros and
Cubs, met at Moody Rd. Park
last week. The game was like
a jagged nerve as both teams
played their hearts out right to
the wire and while the Astors
won the game could have gone
either way. A lot of Perryans
turned out and they were
disappointed not as tension
filled the air and it seemed an

M.L. won several amateur
golf tournaments in Rock

and all over North Georgia.
But the Marine Corps snared
him, and he finished third in
the All-Marine Tourney in
1959.
Through Jim Yates (father
of touring pro Wayne Yates),
M.L. was introduced to a
golfer named Tony Penna,
who sent M.L. to Scioto
Country Club in Columbus,
Ohio. In 1960-1961 M.L. was
teaching pro at Scioto. There
he struck up a firm friendship
with a rising young golfer
named Jack Nicklaus. (M.L.’s
son is named Nicky.)
M.L. returned home in the
early 1960’s and built the first
nine holes at Cherokee
Country Club in Cedartown.
(Cedartown is the hometown
of golfer Doug Sanders.) M.L.

Panthers Shoot Down Jets 18-1
In a shortened 5 inning
game Perry’s Sr. Panthers
slaughtered the Jets in
Warner Robins in their season
opener. The Sr. Panthers,
formerly known as Cougars,
were the co-champs of
Houston County last year. A
Creek. M L, joined them, and
helped develop the beautiful,
but demanding, eighteen hole
course now in existence.
M.L. himself built the sand
traps and finished the
grassing at the course. The
course is par 72, and measures
a little over 7,000 yards. M.L.
spent 1965 through 1968 at
as he faced the heart of their
order. He got the first out on a
comebacker to the box.
Harvey having a 3-4 day hit
one to the infield Smith picked
up near the foul line but
couldn’t get enough on his
throw Smith struck out the
next Cub but then a single and
a walked jammed the bases
when Smith forced tha last
Cub batter to bounce to
Duncan at first for the final
out.
The Cubs outhit the Astros 6-
3 but the Astros had theirs in
the clutch. Stokeling and
Harvey pitched well for the
Cubs striking out 9. A few
walks and Cub errors finally
did them in while Hammock
and Smith the Astro pitchers
were touch in the clutch and
the defensive support was
good. Astro outfielders
Honeycutt, Vince Glover and
Rodney Bridges all made nice
plays in the game. Astros
playing well were Cedric
Mickels, Nick Green, David
Pannesi, Mike Griggs and
Daron Thomas. Cubs with a
good effort were Hervia
Ingram, Jr., Willie Walker,
Hugh Cross, Danny Banks,
Zack Sorrows, Sebastian
Lumpkin and Eddie Johnson.

He remarks, "I feel like an

M.L. stepped out the
clubhouse golf quarters onto

University of Texas star Steve
