New-Look Backfield
Hornets Face Gators
In Spring Tilt Friday
Bad weather and a near
tragic accident have
knocked the glitter of this
year's spring football
practice at Westfield
High School. With a
record forty-one can
didates out for this year's
spring drills, coach
Marvi n Arr i ngton
thought he would get a
good look at a host of
prospective newcomers
but inclimate weather
has kept the Hornets
indoors for much of the
"look ahead" season, and
things have not panned
out as planned. Also,
Greg Gentry received a
neck injury in a freak
trampoline accident and
will be lost in all sports
until summer. He un
derwent surgery this
week.
Despite the adversity,
the Hornets are

eyeballing a better year
in '7B. The offensive line
is returning nearly intact
and the defense is well
stocked with veterans.
"We lost some good ones
on offense (Johnny
Tucker and Jon Pierce
due to graduation), but
have some good material
to work with," coach
Marvin Arrington ex
plained early this week.
Matt Jerles (quar
terback), Donnie
Arrington (fullback). Bill
O'Neal (halfback) and
the transplanted Gene
Moreland, fullback to
tailback, will comprise
the "new look" Hornet
backfield. Candler
Pritchett has also runs at
tailback.
The Hornets will start a
veteran offensive line
that should make things
easier for the new back
field. Andy Poole is back
at center, flanked by Eric
Griffin and Jeff Kennedy

Farmers Working
Hard On 50% Set
Aside Program
At the state American
Agriculture Meeting in
Unadilla last week, there
were reports from
throughout the country on
the 50 percent set aside
program.
Bill Strawser of
Maryland, stated they
are working very hard in
that area. He also gave a
status report on some of
the farm bills that are in
Congress. Reports from
Richardson and Ben
White will handle the
tackle posts. Tight end
Jim McKinney is back
with the Hornets after a
year with the Valdosta
Wildcats. Chuck Kezar
and Wes Goodroe are also
in the offensive line
picture.
On defense the Hornets
have moved a "few
people around" to fill the
gaps of departed players.
Westfield lost three good
linebackers via
graduation, but have
some good help on the
way. "We've got sotne
experienced, proven
football players on
defense, but several of
them will be at new
positions," Arrington
commented. The Hornets

South Carolina are that 70
percent of the farmers
there have already
agreed to the 50 percent
set aside plan.
David Hipps, a Georgia
farmer from Webster
County, reported on
conditions in southern
Texas. He had visited
farms around Hereford
and McAllen, an area
where all land is
irrigated. "If they can't
irrigate they don't plant''
quoted Hipps of one
farmer. He also reported
seeing many fields under
irrigation that are only
half prepared for
cultivation this year with
the other half covered
with last year's residue.
March 20, was agreed
upon as the plow up date
for grain in Georgia.
Burke County spokesman
announced 930 acres was
to be plowed under.
Several other counties,
including Houston,
reported plans were
underway to do likewise
on the specified date.
Gene Deloach
requested all counties to
send a progress report on
the 50 percent set aside to
the state office before the
meeting next week. He
urged everyone to work
on this so the report from
Georgia can hopefully be
completed within the next
two weeks.
Visitors from other
states and Georgians that
visit in the other states all
report that everyone is
looking at Georgia and
will follow the state's
lead. Houston County
farmers have already
agreed so set aside over
15,000 acres this year if it
is determined that
enough farmers nation
wide will do the same.

Westfield has been
working with a pair of
defenses (four or five
down linemen) and will
use both of them Friday
night against River
North. In the four defense
McKinney and Poole are
the ends; Wright and
Kennedy are the tackles;
Richardson, Duckworth,
Moreland and Griffin

with Jerles, O'Neal and
