Tournaments Scheduled
Panther Wrestlers To
Stay Busy This Summer
Thanks to a strong third place finish in the
area wrestling tournament, the Perry High
Panthers placed seven wrestlers in the state
tournament. In the area tourney, held last
month in Fitzgerald, the Panthers matmen
finished third as a team behind Fitzgerald
and Camden County. Dublin finished fourth
behind Perry. There were eight teams in the
competition.
Wrestling to first place finishes in
dividually for Perry were Ben Wright in 128-
pound class and Lester Weekly at 120.
Dwayne Grant (145) and Tim Albritton (107)
captured second place honors. Scott Shaffer,
at 107, took home third place and Boyd
Brooks (155) finished fourth. All six wrestlers
qualified for the state tournament. Norbet
Jackson qualified for the state as an alter
nate in the 167-pound class.
At the state meet held at Woodard
Academy in Atlanta, Dwayne Grant wrestled
his way to a fourth place win at 145. He had
the top finish of any Panther wrestler for the
second straight year and registered a 2-2
mark, losing to the number three and

Perry High’s Panthers are in their third week of spring
football drills with sixty-one players vying for spots on next
year’s varsity. The Panthers will get a chance to test their
wares this Friday night when the varsity tangles with last

Panthers Preparing For Seniors

Coach Mike Luzier’s Panthers lose only
seniors Dwayne Grant and Lester Weekly off
this year’s Perry squad. The Panthers will
return an array of veterans for next season
and have several ninth graders, that
wrestled in several junior high tournaments
this season, that will be counted on.
Dwayne Grant finished the season with an
impressive 20-5 season record, the best mark
on the Panther mat team.
Though the regular season is over for the
Panthers they will still see a lot of action. The
Panthers are scheduled to participate in
several Olympic-style wrestling tour
naments with the first one in Milledgeville
next month and then in Atlanta in May.
Coach Luzier said his squad will wrestle
throughout the summer in various other
tournaments around the state.

Kathleen’s Woody Callaway pilots his black
Comoro towards the third turn at Macon
Raceway during last Saturday’s pre-season race
at the Byron asphalt track. Callaway, who
cleaned house last year on the clay track in
Warner Robins in the Hobby division, has moved
up to limited sportsman this season and finished
third in the feature race Saturday under perfect
weather conditions.

that Thursday (today) is
picture day for their
respective teams. The
track team will have
their pictures taken at the
Perry High football field
at approximately 3:30
p.m. and the baseball
team will have their
pictures taken at old
Houston High baseball
field at 4:00 p.m.
These pictures will be
used in the Perry High
annual and the Houston
Home Journal.
In the event of rain or
inclimate weather, an
alternate date will be
selected for picture day.

Perryans 3rd In Show
Steven Wiley, owner of S&E Cycles in Perry, came in third place in the
“Rats Hole’’ cycle show last weekend at Daytona Beach, Florida. Wiley
was one of 29 contestants in the largest cycle show in the world.
Steve’s entry “used to be’’ a 750-Honda, but is now a showcase cycle.

is sponsoring a big 15-
bout boxing card this
Saturday night at the
Warner Robins
Recreation Center. The
initial bout gets un
derway at 7:30 p.m.
Boxers from all over
the state of Georgia will
compete in the amateur
extravaganza including
boxers from Doraville,
DeKalb, Fort Benning,
Macon, Hazelhurst,
Claxton and Douglas.
The featured bouts of
the night will pit the three
top golden glove boxers in
the state, Willie Preston

Sports Banquet will be at

Raceway with a full schedule of sportsman,
limited sportsman and street cars.
Other local drivers who will be seeing action
include Jimmy Chancey, Tommy Jones and
Ricky Catlett.
Track promoter Curtis Mize predicts that 1978
will be a big racing year for Macon Raceway.

annual Atlanta Braves
Day on Saturday April 8,
1978 at 1:15 p.m. (Pre
game is at 12:15).
Tickets are $2.00 per
person, and children
under three years of age
will be admitted free.
Tickets can only be
purchased at the Houston
County Recreation
Department. You cannot
purchase them at the
game tor this price.
The game is the second
of the season and will be
against the 1977 National
Champion L.A. Dodgers.
Anyone interested in
attending the game can
pick tickets up at the
Houston County
Recreation Department,
at Ted Wright Park, Mon.
