taking any action on pay
raises for the three
constitutional officers
during a meeting in
Perry on Jan 24.
Referendum
The three officers say
there is more to the
matter than pay raises
for themselves. What
concerns them most,
according to Mrs. Griffin,
is the amount of their
department budgets and
pay raises for their
employees.
On Feb. 17, Rep. Larry'
Walker disclosed that
county voters will settle
the matter in a
referendum during
general elections in
November.
The question county
voters will decide with a
"yes" or "no" vote will
be, "Shall the Con
stitution be amended so
as to provide a Board of
Arbitration for Houston
County, when necessary,
to arbitrate certain
budget and salary
matters concerning
constitutional or county
officers?

Talton's annual salary is
$23,332.

Griffin earns $18,378 per
year, plus one percent of
taxes paid after 90 per
cent of county taxes are
collected, fora maximum
commission nos to exceed
$2,000.

The Easter Sunrise Service will be held on
Sunday morning, March 26 beginning at 7 a.m. at
the Perry High School Gym. Rev. Hank Schum,
assistant pastor of the First Presbyterian
Church in Macon will be the guest preacher.
The contemporary Christian music group,
Starshine, from Belhaven College will perform
at Perry Presbyterian Church on Friday, March
24 at 8; 00 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
The Sogadera Club wishes to remind the public
of the drawing for Gloria Ragland’s original
water color to be raffled off on April 14. The
painting is now on display at Security Federal
Savings & Loan. Tickets are on sale for sl. each
and can be purchased from any Sogadera Club

A 20 year reunion of the 1958 graduates of

The idea for settling the
matter by referendum
represents a change of
course from a disclosure
on Jan. 31 that legislators
planned to introduce a
bill in the General
Assembly that would
create the arbitration
board.
A legal notice published
in the Houston Home
Journal on Feb. 2 con
tained a notice from
legislators stating that a
bill would be introduced
in the regular 1978 session
of the General Assembly
to create an arbitration
board for the purpose of
arbitrating and settling
disputes in budgets and
salaries "between the
governing authority of
Houston County and the
constitutional officers of
Houston County; and for
other purposes."
The notice was signed
by Sen. Ed Barker, Rep.
Ted Waddle, Rep. Roy H.
"Sonny" Watson and
Rep. Walker.
