Reese defeated Richard Goodroe by an
unofficial margin of 366 votes in the race for
Mayor of Perry here Tuesday. In the only
other contested race, James McKinley
defeated Connie Jones, black businessman,
1256 votes to 891 for post 3 of City Council ...
Directors and members of the Perry Country
Club gathered on the second tee of the golf
course Saturday to break ground for a new 9
hole golf course. Directors present were:
Seabie Hickson, president, Robert Jones,
Marion Brown, Billy Bledsoe, Julian
Cawthon, P.C. Lawson, Paul Graff, M.T.
Morrow, Pro Wiltz Bernard and Hubert
Stefanini ..! Perry High School’s student of
the week is Woody Hunt, son of Mr. and Mrs.
William W. Hunt of Perry. Woody is
president of the senior class of PHS and is
involved in the following; Beta Club, Student
Council, and the Key Club ... “Mr. and Mrs.
Irresistible” elected Tuesday at Perry High
School are seniors Susan Jones and Gerald
Norris ...

Thursday, December 10, 1959 -- Miss Myra
Wilder of Perry is now flying for Delta Air
Lines as a stewardess, based in Atlanta. She
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Wilder
... Perry High School’s Pierce Staples, 175-
pound halfback who scored 16 touchdowns in
eight games this season, became the third
Panther to sign a contract with the
University of Georgia. Boot Hunt, 1958
quarterback, was a member of the Georgia
freshman team this year. Virgil Peavy, who
signed three years ago, never got to play for
the Bulldogs because of injuries, but he still
attends Georgia ... Floyd Tabor Jr. topped
the Perry Future Farmers of America Honor
Roll for the past six weeks with eleven points
to his credit. Other Future Farmers making
the honor roll were Earl Cheek, Riley Hunt,
Larry Walker, Leo Perfect, John Hammock,
Don Johnson, Jerry Horton, James Langston
and Walton Wood ... Stewart Bloodworth of
Elko, was among 14 students recently chosen
for ‘‘Who’s Who” among the student body of
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College,
Tifton. Bloodworth is the former state
president of the Future Farmers of America

Thursday, December 8,1949 - Mayo Davis,
Perry businessman, defeated Mayor Charles
P. Gray and councilman H.E. Evans
Tuesday for mayor of Perry. Mr. Davis
polled 337 votes, Mr. Gray 265 and Mr. Evans
81 ... Santa Claus is coming to Perry tonight
at 6 p.m. aboard the Nancy Hanks 111. All of
downtown is expected to stay open to greet
Old Kris Kringle ... Long known for their
smooth, sophisticated dance rhythms, Glen
Gray and the Casa Lome Orchestra are
coming to Perry on Tuesday, Dec. 13 ... Judy
Gray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wordna
Gray, celebrated her fourth birthday with a
party Tuesday ... Happy Birthday to little
Jimmy Hardy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alton
Hardy. Jimmy is three years old ... Dr. and
Mrs. J.L. Gallemore have recently pur
chased the home of Mrs. Emmett Barnes and
moved in. Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Kicklighter
have purchased and moved into the

chapter, said the optional
7 p.m. dinner will be
followed by services at
7:45 p.m. He said the cost
of the dinner will be $4.25.

Sgt. Thompson Participates
In Military • Drills In Cuba
Marine Sgt. John A.
Thompson, son of Mrs.
J.l. Thompson of Route 1,
Kathleen, is participating
in a reinforcement
exercise at Guantanamo
Bay, Cuba.
He is a member of the
3rd Battalion, 6th
Marines, 38th Marine
Amphibious Unit, based
on Camp Lejeune, N.C.
The monthlong exer
cise involves more than
3,700 U.S. sailors and
Marines. Marines from
the 38th Marine Am
phibious Unit were put
ashore from three
Norfolk, Va. based ships
by landing craft and
helicopters during an
amphibious landing
operation. Throughout

He served as pastor of

Poulan, Herod, Dawson,
Morris, Preston,
Screven, and Smyrna. He
currently serves the
Trinity Baptist Church in
Smyrna, where he has
been since July 4, 1973.

as President of Noonday
Baptist Pastor’s Con
ference, Executive
Committee of the Georgia
Baptist Convention, Vice
President of the Cobb
County Citizen’s Tem
perance League, Trustee
of Truett-McConnell
College, Moderator of
Noonday Baptist
Association, and as
of communism and
atheism creeping into the
textbooks of our public
schools. A brief
discussion and question
and answer period
followed her talk. All
members were urged to
become concerned over
the lack of patriotism
being taught in today’s
schools.

memorial offering in
memory of Mrs. Frances
Manship has been sent to
the DAR Tamassee
School.

unit maneuvers and
artillery and tank firing
while the Navy will
practice sea control
techniques.
The reinforcement
exercise is being con
ducted to demonstrate
the United States
capability to reinforce
the Guantanamo naval
base and to show the U.S.
interest in ensuring the
free use of the Caribbean
area.
A 1968 graduate of
Perry High School,
Perry, Thompson joined
the Marine Corps in
December 1973.
