Robert Lumpkin ... Governor Lester Maddox was the guest of honor at a
special benefit dinner sponsored by friends and supporters of the
Governor ... Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ray Bowen announce the engagement of
their daughter, Carolyn Rhea, to Bennie Jerome Sutton, son of Mr. and

was honored Sunday by members of the Andrew Chapel Methodist
Church ... Winners of the annual Soil Conservation Essay Contest at
Perry High School received their prizes Friday from Jack C. Miller,
county soil conservationist. They are Bobby, Jones, Earl Cheek and
Douglas Chatham ... Rev. James M. Teresi, pastor of the First Baptist
Church of Perry, was chosen by the Georgia Baptist Convention to be the
alternate preacher for the convention sermon for the 1961 session ... Mary
Sue Nunn has pledged to the Alpha Delta Pi sorority at Emory University
where she is a freshman ... E.A. (Cap) Arnold former city policeman,
entered the race for city council this week ... Sam Ryle has pledged to the
Alpha Tau Oemga fraternity at Emory University where he is a

Wednesday. Deadline is Saturday, Nov. 25 ... Perry’s Junior Chamber of
Commerce voted Monday night to sponsor a Christmas toy project again
this year ... W.C. Martin, manager of the Georgia division of
Southeastern Telephone Company, said the line from Perry to the Griffin
Drive-In on Route 41 north is under construction ... Gene Ethridge, for
mer Perry resident and a student at Mercer University, was ordained as
a minister in impressive services at the Perry Baptist Church Sunday
night ... Donna Smith and Hampton Brown celebrated their sixth bir
thdays jointly when their mothers, Mrs. D.H. Smith and Mrs. W.P. Brown
entertained about 40 of their friends. Assisting in entertaining were Mrs.
Eric Staples, Sherry Staples, Myra Wilder, Mrs. Austin Taylor, and

Thursday. Nov. 28, 1940 -- City election will be held Dec. 3 for the pur
pose of electing three councilmen. The candidates are L.M. Paul, B.H.
Andrew and W.V. Tuggle ... The Roxy, Perry’s new theatre had its gala
opening Monday night with capacity audiences that were gleeful over the
comedy picture starring Judy Canover and proud of the beautiful and
modern appointments of the theatre. Rhett Milam has returned to Perry
as manager ... The Boy Scout troop organized this fall received its
charter ... Mrs. W.B. Evans gave her daughter, Martha Aurelia, a party
celebration of her second birthday ... Tucker Funeral home joins
emergency group ... Miss Helen Gray student at Huntington College in
Montgomery, Ala. spent the Thanksgiving holidays with her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. C.P. Gray ... The New Perry Hotel is getting to be a retreat for
brides and grooms. Quite a few newly weds have been guests at the local
hotel during the past two months. Most of these couples are enroute to
Florida ...

Thursday, Nov. 27. 1930 -- Both Methodist pastors of Houston County
were returned to their charges. Rev. Herbert Etheridge is beginning his
second year in Perry and Rev. W.M. Hobbs his third year on the Elko
charge ... The city of Perry under the direction of Mayor Swanson is
carrying out a beautification program along the newly paved downtown
streets ... Jesselyn Griggs entertained a group of her friends after the ball
game. Those invited were Misses Elizabeth Lee, Caroline Nunn, Carolyn
Coleman and Jesselyn Griggs. Messrs. Hardin Hodge, Dan Dobbins,
Hudson Clements, Bill McKinley, Billy Massee, Cooper Etheridge,
Charlie Yancey ... Mr. and Mrs. Walter Riley announce the birth of a son
on Monday Nov. 24 to be called Walter, Jr. ... Edward A. Reno’s Fun
makers will play in Perry next week sponsored by the P.T.A. ... Mrs.
Lucille Cooper has been named chairman of the Red Cross Christmas
Seals in Perry. ...

Kelly Elected Operations Officer
Phil R. Kelly, a native
of Perry, Ga., has been
elected an operations
officer by the directors of
Trust Company Bank in
Atlanta, Ga. Kelly is
manager of the Encoding
Department.
Kelly attended Perry
High School for two years
where he was active in
baseball, football, and
basketball. Following
service with the I.G.A.
Stores in Atlanta as a
clerk, and the Colonial
Stores in Decatur also as
a clerk, he became
associated with the US
Army as a sergeant in the
Airborne Rigger Brigade
where he was graduated
with high honors from the
Army Rigger School at
Ft. Bragg, N.C.
He joined the staff of
Trust Company Bank in
1971 as a utility clerk in

seminars on supervisory
management and
human relations. He has
also completed
workshops in Effective
English and Effective
Writing.

Kelly is also a member of
the Bass Anglers Sport
smens Society (8.A.5.5.).
He was coach of the
women’s softball team
for the bank’s employee
club for four years.
Kelly is married to the
former Judy L. Freeman
of Decatur, Ga.
