Sports
prayers
My column today is not directly
about sports, but I feel that it has a
great deal to do with sports and
there are some who will agree with
me, and then there will be some
that won't.
What I am talking about is the
recent supreme court decisions re
garding the use of prayer before
sports events such as football
games.
I believe in the right to choose,
that we are fortunate to have in our
great country, and if individuals do
not wish to pray before a game that
should be their right
However, 1 don’t believe that
they should have the right to force
their opinions on the majority or
have laws changed just for the
benefit of a few.
At the present I still feel that I
am in the majority who sees abso
lutely nothing wrong with taking a
few minutes before any event,
whether it be a basketball game,
baseball game, football game or
any other sports event, to render our
thanks for being able to participate
as well as asking that no one is in
jured in the game or event.
We live in the best country in
the world and the members of our
government are supposed to be rep
resenting our wishes as a whole and
not as doing what one or a few in
dividuals want done.
I cannot conceive what our
founding fathers of this country
would do if they were to enter into
our modern lime zone and view
what has happened to their original
thoughts.
I was always taught that there is
nothing wrong with praying and 1
suppose that most people in the
"Bible Belt" would agree with me
on that particular issue.
In fact it was one of the first
things that my mother taught me
how to do, and I suspect many of
you will remember the little bed
time prayers that you were taught
also by your parents.
As of yet I cannot sec that in my
47 years, that those prayers or the
ones that I have said numerous
times since I learned how to talk,
has done any damage to the country
or myself or anyone else for that
matter.
1 simply cannot understand why
it is such a threat to some
individuals that we ask for a few
minutes before the start of any ath
letic competition or sporting event
to give our "Thanks" to our creator
and ask for guidance.
We as a nation have taken the
time to place the motto "In God We
Trust", on our money, and have
added to our pledge of allegiance to
our flag "One Nation Under God,"
so why cannot we have a few min
utes of silent or audible prayer at
athletic events ?
I don't remember of hearing
about any of the individuals who
arc complaining about us praying,
refusing to accept the money of our
country in payment for services or
work because it contains what
might be considered by some a
religious phrase.
I think that if they do not wish
to participate in prayers they should
not do so, but then if I want to be a
part of that type of ceremony at a
football game or sporting event
then give me that right also.
What about you ?
Ochlahatchee players.
