'Consenting Adults' lacks logical plot
By JACKIE COOPER
HHJ Entertainment Writer
"Consenting Adults" is a film di
rected by Alan J. Pakula and star
ring Kevin Kline, Elizabeth
Mastrantonio, Kevin Spacey, and
Forest Whitaker. Now that combi
nation of names and talent should
assure the movie is a first rate piece
of entertainment. But someone for
got to check the plot for logic and
the script for potholes. The movie
entertains but it doesn't hold up on
reflection.
Kline and Mastrantonio play
Richard and Priscilla Parker, a yup
pie couple scratching out an upper
middle income existence in Atlanta.
Their lives have lost a bit of luster
by having to keep their noses to the
semi-grindstone.
Enter new neighbor Eddy Otis
(Spacey). He is a wheeler dealer of
the first degree and charms the
Parkers like nobody has in years.
They arc bowled over by his over
bearing personality and soon be
come a tight foursome with him,
and his sultry wife Kay (Rebecca
Miller.)
Golden boy Eddy turns out to be
a plotter and a user. He has some
deadly activities planned for Richard
including a bit of wife-swapping.
Richard at first is offended by his
offer but later decides it is worth a
try. This is when the movie be
comes deadly serious and at the
same time loses a bit of its logic.
Murder is the result of Richard's
adulterous night. And when Eddy
discovers his wife has been
bludgencd to death he points an
accusing finger at Richard. Richard
is of course innocent of the sin of
murder but no one believes him.
Not his wife nor his attorney (E G
Marshall). It is up to him and a
friendly insurance investigator
(Whitaker) to provide his inno
cence.
Maybe 1 am old fashioned but I
like the heroes in my movies to be
heroic. Kline's character certainly is
not that in any sense of the word.
He is involved in insurance fraud
and adultery. And he never seems to
have any remorse from his acts. Oh
he doesn't want to go to jail for
murder but that is because it is the
one thing he is innocent of.
The framing of Richard for the
murder is pretty hokey, and the way
he discovers the plot is totally off

the wall. Plus Priscilla’s character
falls apart much too easily. She is
so quick to abandon Richard that
you wonder if she is part of the
frame-up.
Another flaw is Spacey’s charac

so repulsive you can’t imagine any
one giving him the time of day
much less becoming his best friend.
One hour in his company and you
would be selling your house to

II you want a satisfying, cohesive
movie experience my advise is not
to make it "Consenting Adults."
There is some entertainment there
during the viewing but it all turns
to ashes in your brain as soon as
you leave the theater.
