Lottery to
be running
by summer
"The people of Georgia want a
fun and efficient slate lottery up and
running by mid-summer of 1993,
and that's just exactly what we're
going to give them," Governor Zell
Miller said today.
Governor Miller said he would
move quickly to appoint the seven
members of the board of the
Georgia Lottery Corporation
(GLC), as provided in the Georgia
Lottery for Education Act.
"1 hope to have the members of
the GLC board appointed within
two weeks," he said. "After the
board is appointed, they can move
ahead quickly to appoint a chief ex
ecutive officer and get the lottery up
and running."
Governor Miller pledged that the
GLC will take a businesslike ap
proach to running the suite games.
"We will not run it like just an
other state agency program, because
it isn't one, he said. "The Lottery
for Education Act takes the politics
out of running the lottery and em
powers the board to run the lottery
as a business-nol as a bureaucracy.
The lottery will be an operation
that would rank among Georgia's
top 20 companies in terms of
revenue-as big as Georgia Gulf
Corporation or Flowers Industries.
We have no choice but to run it
like a business."
Once the lottery is in full opera
tion, with a full slate of games, it
is estimated to produce gross annual
ticket sales of approximately SBOO
million, and, most important,
about $250 million in net proceeds
for three education programs: a vol
untary pre-kindergarten for four
year olds, the HOPE Program of
college and vo-tech school tuition
grants and classroom
improvements.
Tickets for scratch-off games
should be available by mid-sum
mer.
