' ™E HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1992
Letter, from 4A
who support abortion lack values or are immoral. I know
many who support abortion and they are good, moral and
honorable people. But to discredit the pro-life for a lack of
foundational principle is weak and lacking in content.
You continue in your editorial by stating that Bill Clinton
was elected in large part because of his support for abortion
and then write that the medical community does not believe
abortion to be murder. You go further by saying that the
disagreement is not over abortion per se, but "over what
murder is." These statements are misleading and inaccu
rate. To begin, if Clinton was helped in the election by his
pro-choice stand, it is also true that Reagan and Bush in
three separate elections were elected because of their pro
life position. Either the citizens of this country have radi
cally changed their opinion of abortion in the last four years
or there are the issues which take precedence to abortion in
presidential elections. The latter being more likely, don't
attribute the abortion issue to Clinton's success. It is mis
leading.
Concerning the issue of murder, or to be more precise,
life and when it begins. Your editorial is not accurate as it
relates to the facts and the consensus of the medical and
scientific community. Obviously, there is disagreement
over abortion, but not on the scientific evidence that the un
born child is alive, that it is a separate and instinct individ
ual, and that it is a member of the human race. Presently,
there is little, if any, pertinent discussion as to whether or
not abortion is a form of killing. There is argument con
cerning the value of life; whether or not the women's right
to choose supersedes that of the fetus, whether or not the
government should interfere, but to imply that there is a
raging debate over whether or not abortion is a form of
killing is incorrect. Even the National Organization of
Women, a radical pro-abortion group, has not tried that ar
gument since the early eighties.

My puipose of this letter is not to sway others to my
point of view, but rather to point out that the issue of abor
tion is one of the most important issues facing America to
day. As a result, it demands a thorough understanding of
the issues. In my opinion, your editorial has done a dis
service to your readers. There is much more to the issue of
abortion than what your editorial implies. Please don't
misunderstand me. I appreciate the work that you do. I en
joy your newspaper and most of the editorials. But you do
have a certain responsibility that others in the community
do not. Please take it seriously. Write in a manner that is
worthy of both sides, not only your own. Even editorials
should be fair when discussing alternative opinions, beliefs
and ideas.
Respectfully,
