In War Prepare for Peace.
Now that war has begun, it i9
the duty of the American people
do all within their power for its
speedy and satisfactory termina
tion. In private and in public, in
Congress and out of Congress, they
must sink personal or party con
siderations in the united purpose
to uphold the hands of the admin
istration in its conduct of affairs.
Their efforts in this direction, how
ever, should not produce the slight
est diminution in the energies
which contribute to the country’s
material progress.
In this the South has opportun
ity for the display of a magnificent
example to the rest of the country.
There will be felt most acutely
the temporary interference with
commerce, and the consequent in
terruption of dependent trade, the
effects in business circles of alarms
at seaports, and in the mass, of
excitement about actual news and
wild rumors and the possible dis
inclination of capital to make new
ventures.
That the South will meet the
first demand has already been
demonstrated in the alacrity with
which the militia *of the several
States and men not in the ranks
yhave volunteered their services for
the war. That the second emer
gency be met with equal prompt
ness and faced with unwavering
purpose is an imperative duty, and
a duty with a promising prospect.
In the first place, the menace to
commerce because of the.proximity
of hostilities is discounted by the
fact that its carriers are princi
pally under the flag of non-partic
ipant nations. It and the coast
wise trade need not suffer as much
from the war as they might from
a yellow-fever scare similar to
that of last summer. Even should
the temporary impediment be
greater than is now expected, it
cannot destroy the natural advant
ages of location and quick com
munication with centers of pro
duction now enjoyed by Southern
ports, and it were better for a port
to fail for the moment in its
efforts to maintain its growing
prestige than to permit without
resistance its logical traffic to be
nerica, and when ! diverted elsewhere,
up the present! Pubhc improvement,s either

The readers of this paper will be
pleased to learn that there is at least
purchasing one dreaded disease that science lias
been able to cure in all its stages, and
that is Catarrh. Hall’s Catarrh Cure
is the only positive cure known to the
medical fraternity. Catarrh being a
constitutional disease, requires a con-

are just as strong as ever.
There may be slight demoraliza
tion at times in all lines of en
deavor. That is to be expected.
But the shrewd investor or the
thrifty business man looks not to
temporary conditions, but to the
future. There is danger that in
hesitation because of the war to
use his capital in creative under
takings, or to continue his ventures
because of threatened dullness in-
trade, a man may lose advantages
which may be eagerly seized by a
competitor.
Because the South has so much
to gain by courage and calmness
in the present situation, and so
much to lose in uncertainty and
doubt, it is incumbent upon its
people, above all others, to main
tain a steady nerve in business
and industry aud as much as lieth
in them to go about their affairs
as though the whole world was at
peace. Their confidence will be
imparted to men of other sections,
who look to the South for rich re-

Which is better, to thoroughly
cleanse and purify the blood just
now, or make yourself liable to
the many dangerous ailments
which are so prevalent during
summer? Impurities- have been
accumulating' in the blood all
winter, and right now is the time
to get rid of them. A thorough
course of Swift’s Specific is needed
to cleanse the blood and puri
fy the system, toning up and
strengthening it all over. Those
who take this precaution now are
comparatively safe all summer;
but to neglect it is to invite some
form of sickness which is so com
mon during the trying hot season.
It is now that a course of Swift’s

An Oriental Love Test.
This tale is told in the Orient,
says Short Skits. A lady one day
found a man following her and she
asked him why he did so. His
reply was:
“You are very beautiful and I
am in love with you.”
“Oh, you think me beautiful,
do you? There is my sister over
there. You will find her much
more beautiful than I am. Go
and make love to her.”
On learning this the young man
went to see the sister but found
her very ugly, so he came back in an
angry mood and asked the lady
why she had told him a falsehood.
She then answered :
“Why did you tell a falsehood?”
The man was surprised at this
accusation and asked when he had
done so. Her answer was;
“You said yon loved me. If that
had been true you would not have
gone to make love to another wo
man.

An Old Idea.
Every day strengthens the belief of emi
nent physicians that impure blood is the
cause of the majority of our diseases.
Twenty-five years ago this theory was used
as a basis for the formula of Browns’ Iron
Bitters. The many remarkable cures effected
by this famous old household remedy arc
sufficient to prove that the theory is correct.

Idiotic Stuff.
The New York World having re
marked that “the readiness of the
South to fight for the nation is
worth all that our preparations
for Avar have cost, and vastly
more,” the Manufacturer’s Record
tartly rejoins:
“This idiotic stuff is out of date.
It wasn’t worth $50,000,000 or 50
cents to find out that the South is
to fight for the nation. Every
man who is intelligent enough to
be outside of an insane asylum
knows it. The idiots who have
been talking about the ‘South’s
loyalty’ would, in the event of war,
continue to talk, while the South
did the fighting. It is time to call
a halt on this kind of business.
The South i9 a part of the nation,
and a very big part at that. It is
busy attending to its own affairs,
but whenever the country’s honor
is at 3take and the call to arms is
made, the South will send two vol-
unters in proportion to population
to every one from the rest of the
country.”

Coal is a Contraband Article.
Coal is now made a contraband
artible of war.
This is a new feature in the coal
business.
But it is properly contraband of
war in the present trouble, be
cause the efficiency of the navy
is dependent upon it as an article
of fuel.
It is an absolute necessity in the
navy, and is properly designated
or classed as contraband of war.
If Spain should fail to procure
a sufficient supply of coal in the
western hemisphere, her navy
would be completely crippled and
its efficiency practically destroy
ed.
The fact is, coal for the navy is
as important as food for th^ caval
ry and rations for the infanti’3 7
branches of the service.

Longevity From Drink.
Senator Vest has a favorite story
which he has told on the, occasion
of many a political speech, but, so^
far as known, never on the floor of
the United States Senate, says the
St. Louis Globe-Democrat:
“A temperance lecturer was
struggling against odds m Ken
tucky,” says the Senator. “He
was talking to a not very large
audience that had been drawm to
the hall by curiosity., ‘The
effect of alcohol is to shorten life,’
said the lecturer.
“An old man at the rear of the
hall rose at that juncture and said,
‘You’re a liar.’
“ ‘Why?’ inquired the advocate
ot Adam’s ale.
“ ‘Because, sir, I’ve been drink
ing for 75 years and I’m 90 and
am likely to live to be 100. I am
strong enough to lick you if you’ll
step outside. ’
“ ‘Oh, no doubt, sir. Ymu’rean
exception, sir. If you keep on
drinking—’ the-lecturer paused.
““What?” asked the impatient
old toper.
“ ‘If you keep on drinking you’ll
have to be shot on judgment day. ”
