Suffered 20 Years.
M RS. MARY LEWIS*, wife of a promi
nent farmer, and well known by all
old residents near Belmont, N. Y,.
writes: “For twenty-seven years I had been
a constant sufferer from nervous prostra
tion, and paid large sums of money for doc
tors and advertised remedies without-bene
fit. Three years ago my condition was
alarming; the least noise would startle and
unnerve me. I was unable to sleep, had a
number of sinking spells and slowly grew
worse. I began using Dr. Miles’ Restorative
Nervine and Nerve and Liver Pills. At first
the medicine seemed to have no effect, but
after taking a few bottles I began to notice
a change; I rested better at night, my appe
tite began to improve and I rapidly grew
better, until now I am as nearly restored
to health as one of my age may expect. God
bless Dr.Miles’Nervine:” |

Modern Naval Conveniences.
The men of cur modern navy
will go into battle, or blockading
services, surrounded by conveni
ences and luxuries which were un
dreamed of m the days of Decatur,
Hull and Tatnall. The govern
ment has just bought s. refrigera
ting ship, which is,f.o be attached
to Sampson’s squadron. Thus the
squadron will be supplied at all
times with pure and wholesome
fresh meats, whereas the old tim
ers had to fight on, salt, meat and
hard bread, and often even that
was not in good condition. Be
yond that, the modern Jackie,
when sick or wounded, will be ta
ken to a clean, roomy and com
fortable hospital ship, amply pro*
vided with doctors and nurses, in
stead of being stowed away in a
close and stuffy .sick bay on the
fighting vessel.—Savannah News.
Literary Notes.
According to a writer in Success,
Mrs. Amelia E. Barr draws an in
come of $20,000 a year for her
writings.
The assertion is made that for
the last twenty years Alphonse
Daudet never made less than $20,-
000 a year from his work.
Germany publishes more than
twice as many books as France
every year, from 20,000 to 25,000
being her annual output to 10,000
to France.
The original of Sandy, the laird
of Cockpen, in duMaurier’s
“Trilby,” has just died. He was
T. R. Lamont, and the description
of him is said to be remarkably
accurate. He studied art in Paris.
e
Nansen, having made a comfort
able fortune out of his book,
“Farthest North,” Johansen, his
comrade, of the sledge journey, is
reaching for a share of the plumes.
It is rumored that he has received
$3,000 for his English rights of his
coming artic volume, and the
German, Norwegian and French
editions will, no doubt, be profit
able also.
The grave of Benjamin Franklin j
in Philadelphia, is in a neglected
condition. No appropriate stone
rises over it, and the ground about
it is uncared for. Only an old-
fashioned marble slab covers the
spot where the great man lies and
this (now worn and discolored by
age) was placed there over a
hundred years ago and nothing
has been done to it since.
The connection of Zola with the
Dreyfus matter has had one effect
on the sale of the latest book,
“Paris.” France bought fewer
and outside countries more of the
books in consequence. Before the
trial 63,000 copies of the book
had been ordered by booksellers
and before the day of publication
10,000 of the orders had been can
celled in France—but 15,000 extra
orders had been received from
outside countries. Of the books
sent away, Russia took the most,
Germany, England and Italy
following after.

Gen. John B. Gordon thinks the
war with Spain should be rushed
to a conclusion. ’ In the course of
an interwiew a few daye ago, he
said: “The best way to avoid
losses by fever and bullets is to
crush the Spaniards with one blow
and bring our army back home.”
It is evident that the administra
tion is preparing to act in line with
Gen. Gordon’s opinion. Unless
the Spanish fleets make a better
showing than they have yet done,
the spirit will all be taken out of
the Spanish land troops in Cuba,
andgjthe one crushing blow may be
delivered without delay.—Savan
