Business and War.
The number of people in the
United States is -estimated in
round numbers at 75, GOO, 000.
Now tiie men engaged <>n our side
in the present war are not likely
to exceed 200,-000. While this is
by no means a weak fighting force
it is the merest fraction of the
total population. Should all the
volunteers and all of the regular
army be sent out of the country
to Cuba and the Phillipines or
el sew lie re there would still remain
74,500.000 men, women, and. chil
dren whose necessities would have
to he supplied just the same as it
the country was in a state of pro
found peace. The immense army
of homestayerd will continue to
eat, and wear shoes, and need
clothes just as they did before
even a thought of war was enter
tained toward the Spanish. They
will need just as many clothes to
wear, they will need houses to live
in and all the comforts and con
veniences pertaining to the house
hold, and they will have just as
much money to buy all these
things with as they had before
war was declared.
There is no logical reason why
there should not be as much work
for the wageearner now as there was
this time last year and even more,
for many of the men who have en
listed have given up positions
which will now be filled by others.
Of course the war must create a
demand for a number of staple
commodities which involve the
employment of labor. Food and
clothing will be required for 200,-
000 people who will become non
producers. Though exerting a de
pressing effect on certain kinds of
business there is no good reason
why war should cause business to
lag generally.—Savannah Press.

The Jacksonville Tftnes-Uiuon
and Citizen is our authority for
the statement that the word Yan
kee got into use this way: In
1713 one Jonathan Hastings, a
farmer at Cambridge in New York,
used the word as a puffing epithet,
meaning genuine, American-made,
what cannot be surpassed, hardy,
self-reliant, etc. The students of
the college, catching up the term,
called Hastings “Yankee Jona
than.” It soon spread and be
come the jocose pet name of the
New Englander.
Since that time the term was
extended to any American of the
Northern States, after which it
was applied during the Civil war
to mean the Federal forces. Now
it is applied since the Spanish-
American war by all the world to
Americans, regardless of geograph
ical divisions either in territory
or in politics, and accepted in the
United States as such.
Yankee Doodle is Yankee Doo
dle (Oliver Cromwell), who went
to Oxford “with a single feather
fastened in a macaroni knot,”
‘‘Yankee Doodle came to town upon
Ins little pony,
Stack a feather in his hat, and called
it macaroni.”
The brigade under Lord Percy
marched out of. Boston playing
this air “by way of contempt,”
bnt were told, they should dance
to it soon in another spirit. It is
said that the Persians call the

BEWARE OF MORPHINE.
Special forms of suffering lead many
a woman to acquire the morphine
habit. One of these forms of suffering
is a dull, persistent pain in the side,
accompanied by heat and throbbing.

womb and bearing-down pains. A
| friend advised me to take Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound; I have
taken five bottles, and think it is the
best medicine I ever used. Now I can
work, and feel like myself. I used to
be troubled greatly with my head, but
I have had no bad headaches or palpi
tation of the heart, womb trouble or
bearing-clown pains, since I commenced
to take Mrs. Pinkham's medicine. I
gladly recommend the Vegetable Com
pound to every suffering woman. The
use of one bottle will prove what it
can do.”
