Had a Girl Arrested for Kissing

Omaha, July 16>—A»new species
of man, but not native to the soil,
be if known, has been discovered
in Omaha. There is only one of
hiin, so far, and there will proba
bly never be another. He resent
ed a chaste salute from the lips of
a pretty woman. So much so,
that when she insisted upon plant
ing, not one, but half a dozen, in
an opening in his bristling beard,
he called lustily for help, sought
the aid of a deputy marshal and
had the fair one placed within
four Stony walls.
More astonishing does the inci
dent become when it is known that
the man is a dashing cavalryman,
Capt. Iller, of one of the regiments
which served in Cuba and in the
Philippines.
Had it been some more serious
minded private citizen with a jeal-
campaign. The following fore
cast of the vote by him, being the
first, will be interesting and can
be kept for future reference:

married, neither does he expect to
be. Therefore the youths of
Omaha are wondering what man
ner of flesh and blood he is.
The osculation took place this
morning m crowded; Dodge street,
one of the city’s most prominent
business thoroughfares. This may
throw some light upon the cap
tain ’s peculiar behavior. Milita
ry men are famed for loving with
dignity their sweethearts. This
one probably thought he was
made to cut a ridiculous figure.
But Omaha young men won’t be
easy with him on this account.
They say that no matter what the
time or place the young lady
should have been met half way,
and guided to a place where the
caresses could be bestowed in se
crecy.
Fern jAtwood i^'ihef ardlritimiss.
She is unknown to Omaha, and
confesses to Chicago origin. In
the minds of many* this explains
it. Shp is tall, fair, well groomed
and of good carriage. She admits
never having met Capt. Iller pre
vious to the public encounter, and
does not explain her sudden dis
play of warmth in any other way
than that she “couldn’t help it.”
Capt. Iller was walking rapidly
“eyes front, chin in and chest
out,” like any perfect soldier when
Miss Atwood floated into view.
She came right at him like... a
charge of cavalry. His surprise
was complete. Before he could

Life’s Opinion.
A western man wrote to Life,
the clever satiric weekly of New
York, asking it to state itB posi
tion in the national campaign.
Life responded: “We are not going
to support McKinley or Mr. Bryan.
"We are not going to support im
perialism nor free silver. The is
sue of this campaign is imperial
ism. The election ot Mr. Bryan
would not mean free silver. He
could not force it upon the coun
try if he tried. Congress is for
gold, and will so remain. Mr.
McKinley’s reelection, especially
with Mr. Roosevelt at his elbow,
would promise a prolonged and
bloody orgie of imperialism—that
is, of conquest, debt and dishonor.
As to the two candidates person
ally we prefer Mr. Bryan. He
has convictions—such as they are
—and he carries a spine.
