CANDLBR TALKS ON CHINA.
Atlanta, Ga., July 23:—“If I
was presiden t of the United States
I would send 100,000 troops into
China at once and punish the
Chinese for the atrocities they
hhVe been perpetrating there in
the lost few days,” Governor Can
dler said today.
“McKinly will not do this how
ever as he has an idea that every
President, who calls an ex£ra ses
sion of Congress will be defeated,
and the republicans regard the
election of McKinley as a more
important event than the protect-
tion of the lives and property of
Americans and the honor of the
government.
“I would not be surprised if the
whole world was at war with Chi
na in the next few* days.
SIGNIFICANT.
McKinley’s speech of acceptance
has been considered of more than
usual significance. A correspond
ed t of the New York World has
taken the trouble to examine the
text of the speech closely and he
finds that:
7,074 words were devoted to
money and silver.
313 words to imperialism and
the Philipines.
242 words to praise of republi
can record.
126 words to protection.
82 words to China.
72 words to Hague conference.
66 word3 to Hawaii.
W words to Spanish . war.
23 words to Cuba and Porto Rico.
0 words to trusts.
If the number of words in his
speech on each question at issue is
to be taken as an index of faik de
sire to have the discussions of the
campaign, it will readily be under-?
stood that he would be glad to a-
void all the prominent question
now before the people.
The August Chronidle puts it
thus: “We have been for a long
time trying to rid this country of
Chinese and now the Chinese are
trying to rid their country of us
and other “foreign devils.” It is
a game of cross purposes. Both
people think they will have the
“superior civilization.” It will
take much time and money, and
lives to solve the ques-
w ith the entries in eacn presiaen-
tial race, to eay nothing of keep-
j D g informed on the issues at
stake.
The present campaign iorms no
exception to the rule, as the fol
