Capt.J. D. Bell Dead.
Captain Joseph Daniel Bell, president
of the Bell Water Company of Waco,
Texas, died at his home in that city
last week at the age of 63 years, after
a continued illness of several months.
He leaves one brother, Mr. James
CITY OFFICERS TO BE ELECTED.
A Number Of Applicants For Places to be
Filled by Council.
. The election of city officers for 1901
will occur on the first night in January
next. The following is a list of the
officers to be chosen: City clerk, Chief
of police. Sanitary inspector, and day
policeman, First night policeman,
Beeoiifl 5 night policeman, City attorney,
City treasurer, Street overseer, Ceme
tery sexton, City electrician, Engineer
at water and light plant, City physician

The aldermen recently elected for

sworn in and Mayor Mitchell will an
nounce J bis” standing * committees for
the year. -There are -twelve of these
and the announcement of the members
of 'the different committees will be,
awaited with considerable interest.
The license tax Ordinance will also
be passed up at that time and this
meeting of council is one of great k-,
portance.
For several different offices it is un
derstood that there are a number of
applicants, especially in the police de
partment. In some instances there is
no opposition to* the present officials, so
far as known. It is impossible to fore
cast the result as members of council
have not been heard to express them
selves. /
The first year of Mayor Mitchell’s
administration has been a great suc
cess and he and the council are to be
heartily congratulated. They will
leave no stone unturned next year to
make it the best in the city’s history. *

In l874Captain Bell went to Georgia*
and there he wedded Miss Sallie'
Henry, the daughter of Colonel ft. E.
Henry, and she still survives Jiim.
In 1886 Captain Bell, after making
repeateef attempts- succeeded in getting
an artesian flow of water, he being the
first per|on in tbis section pf thestat^l
to succeed in this work.

There is at least one thing that
the present Georgia legislatiirefhas
done which is to its credit : It is
the passage of the bill appropriat
ing $15,000 au-nually to the Sol
dier’s Home, which has been
closed for a number of years. The
bill passed the house by a vote of
106 to 50, and the senate ratified
the action cf the house. !

Holidays Approaching.
The Holidays will soon be here and
the people are preparing to enjoy
the occasion. Many entertainments
will be given in the city and over the
county. There will be Christmas trees
galore and the children are anticipa
ting much fun. The merchant* have
prepared for the celebration by provi
ding fireworks and goodies by the
