Southern and G. J. & S. Railroad’s Re
ceipts Crawl Up—Due to Increase in
Manufacturing' Enterprises—These
Roads to Exchange Freight at
Southern Depot.
That Gainesville is rapidly growing,
is evideneed by the increased amount
of freight and passenger business of the
Southern, and Gainesville, Jefferson &
Southern railroads at this point. Both
freight and passenger business show a
wonderful increase within the past two
years, and indications point to an even
greater business m the future.
Mr. W. A. Ramseur, agent of tho
Southern road, was seen this week and
asked about the business of the South
ern at this point. He stated that the
Southern’s freight and passenger traf
fic had increased over 100 per cent, in
the past two years. For instance : the
total freight and passenger receipts at
Gainesville tor the Southern road dur
ing January 1900, were 87,300 ; for Jan
uary 1901, the receipts from the same
sources amounted to $14,600. Thus, it
is seen that, taking an average month
ih the year, the receipts* are exactly
doubled for January 1901 over the same
month last year.
j Asked as to the cause of the increase,
he replied that it was due to the estab
lishment of more manufacturing inter
ests in the town. As manufacturing
enterprises are established, the more
freight and passenger business there is.
Mr. Ramseur states that when the Pac-
olefc and Vesta mills begin operations,
the freight business will he very large
ly increased, as the railroads now 'only
handlethe freight coming in; where
as, then they will also handle it going
out.
Col- S. C. Dunlap was asked about
the increase in the freight and passen
ger business of the G. J. & S., railroad.
While no figures were, given, he re
plied that the road was doing well and
it had had a corresponding increase in
business. He attributed it 4 to thdgrowth
of the town and the general prosperity
of the country.
Every line of business will he helped
hv the location of manufacturing en
terprises here. The railroads are first
to receive the benefit, as they begin
hauling the freight to be used in con
structing the plants, and when their
goods are manufactured the railroads
haul them away.
The Southern and G. J. & S. railroads
are now dickering over an agreement
for the transfer of freight from one
road to the other at or near the South
ern depot. The G. J,. & S. road wants
to run its cars up on a sidetrack to
near the Southern depot, and it is be-
Monday jiieved satisfactory arrangements will
be made, as it now costs the roads
three dollars a car to have freight
hauled across town from one depot to
the other. The superintendent of the
Southern and Receiver Dunlap of the
G’ J. & S., met at the Southern depot
Tuesday, and went over the right-of-
way and discussed the matter thor
ougbly. It is highly probable that the
G. J. & S. trains will soon run up on a
sidetrack to the Southesn depot for the
purposes stated above.

hoard of county commissioners, this
