STORYETTES.
The threatened conversion of
Gainesville’s public square into
business blocks—if the county
commissioners find that they can
legally sell the beautiful little
plat with its growth of symmetri
cal trees—has aroused the antago
nism of a very respectable minor
ity of our people, who think, with
the writer, that to cut down the
trees and build stores upon the
square would be a most regret-
able action. In this connection
the following, from the peu of J.
A. Morris, who conducts the 1 ‘Sci
entific and Industrial” department
in the Atlanta Sunday Constitu
tion, upon this very subject may
not be inapropos, illustrating as
it does what the dwellers ic^ an
other city, th&t sprang from a
very small beginning, think on
the subject of breathing places for
the people. The article in ques
tion is entitled “Beautifying and
Protecting Parks,” and reads:
“There is nothing so impressive
to thq sightseer as beauty. No in
vestment so profitable as improv
ing the attractions of a village,
town or city. We talk of utilities
and essentials, but to confine our
selves strictly to essentials and the
bate necessities of existence is to
rob life of its value. No progress
ive merchant would dare restrict
his wares to the absolute essen
tials, nor any sensible manufactu
rer divest bjs products of attract
tiveness. Tie very life of trade
is based on beauty. We find at
tractive advertising is tjhe advance
advantage of trade, and this fol
lowed by artistic display is almost
sure to mean large sales and
profits. What is true of the citi
zen applies equally to the city.
Ordinarily municipal corporations
do not make their wares and ad
vantages known through the press
—I don’t know why except it be
that the city relies on the almost
- Universal, but at the shme time
costly, local patriotism of the
local press to vaunt the city’s at
tractions and advantages. Now
take Atlanta: Nothing can so ef
fectively advertise and attract as
beauty. We need more parks; we
need more streets parked; we have
made a very pretty start, and one
admired by every visitor, m North
avenue between the Peachtrees.
It is a beauty and it is protective
m the fact that it is a physical
impossibility for a street railway
to. ever scatter its dust and annoy
by its noise the residents on North
avenue. This should be regarded
as but a beginning. A broad
scheme to make all streets, where
possible, a system of parks would
add immensely to our prosperity,
to say nothing of our health and
comfort. Let all new streets be of
ample width for parking, then put
in trees and flowers and fountains
and make Atlanta a perfect bower
of beauty.” And what holds good
in Atlanta holds good in Gaines
ville. 11

Oliver, one of Gainesville’s ne

Sunday night. He noticed in his

who was without a coat, wearing
the latest thing in the shirt waist

his remarks discussed the offend-

“The people around this country
ain’t much for sugar cane, but I
guess I’d better tell you about
Gainesville’s fire department and
her Bmart horses,” began a casual
visitor to The Cracker office the
other day. ‘‘As I was going down
there I didn’t get along very well,
for I was riding a horse; his ribs
rattled so it frightened’^nm to
death, and I

, for the
before I felt sick ahd the doctor
told me to take pills. I Went'to
bed and left the pills on the bu
reau ; forgot to take them. I awoke
in the middle ot the night and felt
awfully sick; then I thought of
the pills; it was very dark and I
couldn’) find a match, so I went
feeling around. I found them and
took them in one swallow. When
I awoke next morning I happened
to look on the bureau, and instead
of taking the pills I had swallowed
four collar buttons. I was afraid
to move around for fear I’d get
the cholera. I went to the doctor
and told him about it; he said;
‘Oh! that’s ;all right; you go home
and swallow a button-hook and
yank them up again. 4 I went
right back home and did it and
was sitting out on the piazza with
a pain in my misery when along
came a sentimental-looking chap
and he stopped right close by me
-—he didn’t know I was there—
and recited the following pathetic
verses:
‘Cream and peaches once a week,
Kiss your girl on right-hand cheek;
Apples green and apples dried,
Kiss her on the other side.
‘That evinces wretched taste;
Take your girl about the waist;
Lift her on her pink toe tips
And print it squarely on her lips.
‘Seize the maiden in your arms,
Blushing with her tempting charms;
And it would, I think, be snugger
Oft to kiss and tightly hug her.
