M Today 0. L. Richards, a dealer
in Indian relics, paid $1,600 for
L an Indian squaw dress ornamen-
■ ted with 1,024 |elk teeth. This
dress has been in one Cheyenne
[family for 127 years, and for
( along time speculators and collec
tors of curious have tried to pur-
| chase it. Many photographs have
j been taken of the dress and two
or three scores of squaws have
i been married ill it for luck, but;
I all offers to buy it have been re- ]
Ijected until 7 now. Mary Bent,
[daughter of George Bent, a fa-
1 mous “squaw mao,” and a connec
tion of the Bent family of Mis- j
souri, and the great grandaughter
of the original posessor of the elk
teeth dress, yielded at last to
I monetary inducements. Elk teeth j
ire very scarce and readily sell |
| for from $5 to $10 each. With ]
the Indians each elk tooth repre- j
! sent* the value of a pony. It is I
claimed by Mrs. Bent that sever* j
al of the elk teeth on the dress J
were gifts from Joseph, : ^The Nez j
Perces chief. They have the!
chief’s mark on them. I

-fThe students at the' Ainericiaii
Temperance University at Ham-
man, Ten., have-not had the prin
ciples of temperance instilled into
them very deeply judging from
their recent escapade in hazing a
fellow student. The account tells
of most.brufcal treatment. A stu
dent was taken* from bis room at
night, carried to the woods/ tied
to a tree and severely beaten, af
ter which bruised and bleeding, ]
he was placed under a hydrant,
the water ft tnrned on and the suf
ferer left. When-found the next
morning he was almost frozen and
in a semi-conscious condition.
This is one of the worst hazing
cases that has been reported in a
long while, and the courts should
be appealed to for redress. Those
guilty of so barbarous %an act!
should be punished to the f all ex
tent of the law.—Ex. |
