MILKING WHEN THE SIGN
ISN’T RIGHT.
When I was young and used to
roam around over the count ly,
gathering watermelons iu the dark
of the moon, I used /o think J

think so now. I do not milk a
cow now unless ihe sign is rigb/>
and it hasn't been right faru good
many years
The last cow 1 tried to milk
was a common cow, born iu obscu

she wore her tail high and she
was haughty, oh, so haugA/y.
1 made a common place remark
to her, one iliai is used iu me very
best of society, one that need not
have given offense anywhere. I
said ‘so,’ aud she “~oed.“ Then I
told her to “histe,” and she “hist

it. She pul 100 much expression
In it.
Just then 1 beerd something
crash through the window of the
born aud fall with a dull sickewiug
thud on the outside. The neigh

caused /he noise. They fouud that
I nad done it iu getting turongb

I asked tue neighbors if the
barn waR still standing. They
said it was. Then I asked if the
cow was injured much. They said
she seemed to be quite robust
Then I requested them to go on
in and calm the cow a little and

HOGS TRANSFORMED.
To know the American yc a
must see all sides of him. On n
train between Jersey City and
Pa terson, a day or two ago, a
poorly dressed woman, carrying a
baby in her arsis, walked through
two coaches, and was unable to
find a seat. The railroad hog
was there. In a dozen cases be
had a whole seat to himself, and
be meant to keep it, The woman
finally found refuge in the smok
ing cai, and by and by the hog
went forward to enjoy a Havana,
and found her crying.
“What’s the matter ?”
“Baby is very 111, sir.”
“And where are you going 1 ’
“To my sister’s. My husband
ia dead, and I have no home now.”
“Leave you auy money ?”
‘•Not a dollar, sir.’,
“Umph! Sorry for you, Let
me hand you this.”
The Hog has been rebbed of
bis bristles. W T Oman’s tears have
melted bis selfishness. Be return

Hogs ibout him and said:
“Come down ! Poor woman—
sick baby—no borne. Come
down!
The Zfogs went down for their
wallets and in ten minutes the
sum of S4O was pat into the wo
man’s band and and the Boss Hog
observed :
“There—there—ifg all right—
not a word- Now come back here.
And as she followed him into
the coach s dozen Hogs rose up
and insisted tha. she take their
seats, and ail gatnered around her
to voice the sentiment:
“Poor woman! Poor baby !
Isn’t there something we can do
for *ou?’ ,
The railroad Hog caD’i be crowd

A Marvelous Stork
» TOLD IN TWO LETTERS. '
FROM THE SON:

ula, and the inclosed letter will tell you what
a marvelous effect
Ayer’s Sarsapar V,
a** had in his ea s\ I think his bloo& must
have contained the humor for at least ten
yoar» ; but it did not show, except in the form
of a scrofulous sore on the wrist, until about
fire years ago. From a few spots which ap
peared at that time, it gradually spread so as
to cover his entire body. I assure you ho waa
terribly afflicted, and ar object ot pity, when
he began using your medicine. Mow, there are
few men of his age who enjoy as good beaitb
as he has. I could easily name fifty persoih
who would testify to the facts in his case.
Yours truly, W. M. Philups.**
FROM THE FATHER: pleasure and
a duty for me to state to you the benefit I
have derived from the use of <9
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla.
Six months ago I was completely covered with
a terrible humor and scrofulous sores. The
humor caused an incessant and intolerable
itching, and the skin cracked so as to cause
the blood to flow in many places whenever
I moved. My sufferings were great, and my
life a burden. I commenced the use of the
Sarsaparilla In April last, and have used
It regularly since that {ime. My condition
began to improve at once. The sores have
all healed, and I feel perfectly well in every
respect being now able to do a good day’s
work, although 73 years of age. Many inquire
woa. kasVrought such a cure in my case, and
I tell them, as I have here tried to tell you.

Durham is historic. It was neutral ground
