sin_yerz On The Rhine.
A soldier of the L.2zion lu%lying in Algiers,
Tuzre wes lack of woman’s nursing, there was lack of woman's tears;
#3ut a comrade stood beside him, while his life bleod ebbed away, _
And bent, with pitying glances, to hear what ke might say.
Tae dving soldier faltered, and he took that comiade’s hand,
And he said, ‘I never more shall see my own, my native land;
Take a message, and a toker, to some distant friends of mine,
: For.] was born at Bingen—fair Bingen on the Rhine.
“Tell my brothees and companioas, when they meeet and crowd around, '
To kear my mournful stery, in the pleasant vineyard ground,
"T'hat we fought the battle bravely, and when the day was done,
FFull many a corse lay ghastly pale beneath the setting sur; ,
And, 'mid the d2ad and dying, were somz grown old in wars,
The death wound on taeir gallant breasts, the last of mauy scars; ‘
And some were young, and suddenly beheld life’s wmorn decline, —
And one had com? from Bingen—fair Bingen on the Rhine,
“Tell my mather that her other son shall comfort her old age;
* Forl wasstill a truant bird, that thought his home a cage.
For my father was a soldier, and even as child
My heart leape 1 forth to hear him tell of struggles fierc: and wild;
And when he died, and left us to divide his scanty hoard,
I let them take whate'er they would, bat kept my father's sword;
And with boyish love I hung it where the bright sun used to shine, |
On the cotlage wall at Bingen—calm Bingeu on the Rhire.
*¢lell my sister not to weep for me, and sob with dreoping head,
When troops come marching home again with glad and gallaut tread, |
But to Jook upon them proucly, with a calm and steadfast eye,
* " For her brother was a soldier too, and not afraid to die; i
B[t mha gLk A damy e L
g :T##uen to him kindly, withont regret W?MW A e
And to hang tire old sword vi its place [my fathet's sword and mine],
Yor the honor of old Bingen,-~dear Bingen on the Rhine. |
#‘There’s another--not a sister; in the happy days gone by, |
You'd have known her by the merriment that sparkle(i in Ker eye;
“Foo innocent for coquetry, to» fond for idle scorning,—-
O friend! Ifear the lightest heart make sowetimes heaviest monrning!
Tell her the'last right of my lhife {for ere the morn be risen,
My body witl be out of pain, my soul be out of prison | l
I dreamed 1 stood with her, and saw the yellow sunlight shine |
On the vinesclad hills of Bingen,—fair Bingew ox the Rhine.
“I saw the blue Rhine sweep along; I heard, or seem to hear, ‘
The German songs we used to siag, in chorus sweet and clears
And down the pleasaunt river, and up the slanting hill,
The echoing chorus sounded, through the evening, calm and still;
And her glad blue eyes were on me, as we passed, with friendly talk,
Down many a path beloved of yore, and well-remembered walk!
And her little hand lay hightly, confidingly in mim:,——-
But we'll meet no more at Bingen --loved Bingen on the Rhine.
“His trembling voice grew faint and hoarse, his grasp was childistly weak=
His eye put on a dying look, he sighed and ceased to speak;
His comrade bent to lift him, but the sparks of life had fleq,
The soldier of the Legion in a foreign land 1 dead,
And the soft moon rose up slowly, and calmly ske looked down
On the red sand of the batulefield with bloody corses strewn;
Yes, calmly, on that dreadful scene her pale light seemed to shine,
As it shone on distant Bingan,—-sad Bingen on the Rhine.”

The Automobile Road Through Chariton Comaty
A movement is on foot to build an automobile road frem Atlun
ta to Jacksonville, Atlanta being a little northwest and Jackseunville a
little southeast of us, there is no doubt but that the road will pas:
through Charlton County and also through Folkston, as it 18 already I
mapped out hy the “pathfinders.” Is not the time here for our people
to begin the good roads movement? This county should build a good
road from the Pierce County line to the Florida line. The distance is
®ot very long and the road we owe to the citizens of the counmty and
to the automobile association.
: The good road, we say, will be an advertisement for (‘harlto\l
County and a good ad. at that. We are sorry to say that Chariton has
been put on record by the automobilists as having the worst roads from
Atlanta to Jacksonville, [t has been in our own county that the cars
have baen delayed for hours, 2n account of bad roads. and when we
‘real and hear of such, it skould make every citizen wake up and begin
pushing the good road movement in our county.
While the road from Racepond to Folkston is bad, and is down
‘oarrecordas the worst from hera to Atlanta, vu & little work it can be;}
the best, and inetead of being“k%ockbd," and «baving to remain low,
we can talk of our good road. '
We Lu its that the county commiggioners of nearly every county
hrough which the road passes have agreed to push forward, and if our
commissioners have not biready made such an agreement, why not at
ounce? The earlier the road is made the better for our county. We are
not taiking for the citizens of that section alone but for every cilizen
in the coanty, hecauaa:file:oad'will'holp the whole county. Let not
Gur people be the slowest t 0 act, or Charlton be the last county to come
iv with a good - oad; but iet us gee the need of geod roads, and also
re:lize our duly and govern ourseives accordingly and soon we will
nave good roads. & |
