’l‘he past week nas been an ideal one for crops.
There are some sponges that absorb water and others that absorb ey
erything they can get their hands on.
Farmer Jones was pleased as Punch when he heard his sor was being
taught fencing instroments used in the instruction, his pleasure gave way
'to disgust.
We know.v of a farmer who is fast paying for a (20-acre farm with
poultry and dairying. Ilis wite works with him, not to the detriment of
“refinement,” either. Her work 15 largely with the chickens, though she
also helps some with the milking, Those folks seem to have as much
time for visiting as any, and their income is sure.
The Knocker.
syt
‘Go ahead and make your play;
Never mind the knocker,
He’s in every worker’s way;
Never mind the knocker.
Every one who seeks to shine,
If successful, he’ll mallign;
“Tis of fame a certain sign—
Never mind the knocker.
If you have a task to do,
Never mind the knocker.
Have you nerve and see it through;
Never mind the knocker.
When yourlaborshave been done,
You may know that you have won,
If the pounding has begun—
Never mind the knocker.
He strikes only those who climb.
Never mind the knocker.
Tia success he deems a crime;
Never mind the knocker.
If he "'mmers at your name,
‘Then be sure you,re in the game;
“Tis a species of acclaim;
Never mind the knocker,
His low aim affirms his caste;
Never mind the knocker.
Fiercest storms are quickest passed
Never mind the knocker.
When a knocker’s coarse is sun,
When his jeers and scoffs are done,
He’ll be cursed by every one—
Never mind the knocker.

*‘Master of human destinies am I}
Fame, love and fortune on my footsteps wait,
- Cities and fields I waik. T penetrate
Deserts and seas remote, and passing by !
Hovel and mart and palace, goon or late
I knock unbidden. Once, atevery gate:
If feasting, rise; if sleeping, wake; before
I turn away, 1t is the hour of fate,
| Aud they who follow me reach every state
Mortals desire, and conquer every foe
Save death. But those who doubt or hegitate,
Condemaed to failure, penury or woe,
| Seek me in vain and ceaselessly implore;
I answer not and I return no more.”
Charlton County fruit and garden lands has onportunities for home
building in the chosen field of diversified agriculture, The greatest for
tunes in America have been made in land. Itls a safe and sure invest
ment. Tt has been said: “There is but one crop of land—there will ney
er be another” Land values in the older settled communities are about
as high as they will go for many years, or until the new lands of the west
and south are gone. It makes the heart ache to see deluded wmen take
their wives and babies and settle on the “dry” lands of the west. They
are doomed to failure, for there 1s only one sure method of cultivation in
the arid states and that is by irrigation. Real estate liars canaot deny
this and your own judgment should supply the rest. The chance to get
lands cheap in Charlton County will soon pass, even as it has now passed
in passed in the eastern and middle states.
Any man with vim, determination, and even a small capital, can
come here and lay the foundation for an independent life-—in a climate
that is pleasing, where the soil responds an hunndred fold and the sun
shines almost every day, where the farmers work less and have more than
in any other country, The resources we have here, when developed,
with our fine climate, will be a new wonder of the world. All we need
is the people to help, and a great many eyes are being turned this way,
and the sooner you get here the better it is for you.
Our country will stand investigation by the most severe critic.‘
Land never burns, dies, nor runs away; it vets hetter every day, Its value
increases vhile you sleep, Put your money in Charlton County’s lands.
The tide of immigratiun is tzening this way. In five years from today,
land will be worth one bundred dollars an acre that you can now buy
