CHARLTON'S INDEX.
Editorial Savfinah News, Feb. 6th.
You can tell a good deal of what's ina book by running
“over the index. You can almost certainly tell a great deal
aboutany community by observing its newspaper from
week so week. T-herer exceptions, but they are rare
and only emohasizes th& general rule that » town and coun
ty ars known by the newspapers published ia them. Oune
of the best indices to fcmhm) county is its newspapers.
The most significant thing avout the newspaper published
at Folksion is the faet that it has ccmpletely changed in
matter and appearence any vitality in the past saw months,
Something las been changhg in Charlton, It is reflected
in the county paper, Theie has been a complete revolution
in activity of various lines in and around Folkston and over
the ccunty of which that .developing town is the capital,
There is a new life in farming—a county agent, for one
thing, has just been employ:’i; there is tremenuously increas
ed interest in the educational system: there is un awakening
in the health-improving activity; there are better places of
business and new houses of worship; there are new stores
and homes and small industhu. There is a spirit in the
people themselves that is new ®nd on-going. And this
story is told without going so Charlton—simply by noticing
the change in the face of the ¢ounty paper week ufter week
for the past few months. # *
FOLKSTON'S DIRE NEED.

Self presrevation is the first law of hature.
Safety First to Life, then Property is too closely

Three Fires in a week in the same block, may or
may not mean that a fire bug is a loose in the com
munnity, for our part we are not prone to believe evil
or such emnity to a man, or our Community. But
be that as it may, we do know that we are not pro
tected from the fire evil as we ought to and should
be, and we have ruch‘unbounded faith in our City
Fathers and the GMWWG%.M“
town and the Coast Line as to believe in immediate
fire protection.

while enroute to Waycross.
He was very much impressed
with our school *buildings and
equipment. When he came out
side, the first thing henoticed was
the numerous scrubby trees on
the ground, some of which should
ve removed, using camphor trees
in the correct places.
T'hen he drew up a plan of base
planmings for each building io
which native shrubs might be
used. A hedge of }i:lk was
suggested for the court,add the
