Smith-Lever Fund
Atlanta, Aug. 7—Sentiment is
growing in the legislature for
giving a third of the Smith-Le
ver fund to the Georgia Normal
and Industrial College at Mil-
ledgeville to be used in carrying
on the work of home economics.
Under the Smith-Lever act of
Congress the federal government
appropriates a very large sum of
money annually to be divided
among the several states and to
be used by them in farm demon
stration work and home econo
mics. In order to secure the
fund, a state must make an ap
propriation equal to its allotted
share.
Georgia’s share of the fund,
plus Georgia’s off-setting appro
priation, is now expended thru
the medium of the State College
of Agriculture at Athens, which
handles both the farm demon
stration work and .the home
economics Work.
Graduates oi the Georgia Nor
mal & Industrial College are the
leading domestic science and
home economics experts in the
state. The work of home econo
mics provisions of the Smith-
Lever act is distinctly a woman’s-
work. Hence the graduates and
studients of the college have
petitioned the legislature to place
this feature of the Smith-Lever
program in the hands of the col
lege at Milledgeville, while con
tinuing the farm demonstration
feature through the State Col
lege of Agriculture.
