Prisoner Demands That Sentence Be
Carried Qut, as it Would Be Illog

Not to Do So.
Berlin.-—That the execution of n
death sentence Is stll.l Carried out in a
hi range medieval manner in modem
Prussia was brought to light recently
in the case of Friedrich Schumann,
convicted of murder.
Schumann himself did an odd thing.
After being held in prison for nine
luonths. In* petitioned the Prussian
government tO carry out the sentence.
He wrote that lie was absorbed In
mediintion on his own “second ego”
and insisted on the sentence being
carried out dn tin* ground that it
would he Illogical for the minister of
justice not to do so as long as capital
punishment remained in force.
Order Execution.
To oblige the prisoner instructions
were given to the authorities at the
Ploetzonsee criminal prison for the
sentence to he carried out. The fol
lowing morning a table covered with
a black cloth was placed in the court
yard of the prison behind the block.
In convict's dress, with his hands
hound behind him. Schumann was led
Into the courtyard by two warders.
There he was received by the Judge
mid Hie executioner, Herr Schwietx.
Herr Sehwletz, according to the cus
tom. was altiml in evening clothes,
a top hut and white gloves. Beside
the block stood his three assistants.
The judge, sitting at the black table,
greeted the prisoner with the words:
“Are you FrleijrU-h Schumann?”
After the prisoner had affirmed that
he was. the judge read the sentence,
rind then, turning to the executioner,
said: “Kxecutloner, do your duty.”

This was a signal for the three as

The popularity of Silveus Ghisses has been won by sheer merit.
Scrupulously just dealing together'with the thorough pains
taking’examination of medical graduates, and the scientifically
accurate grinding that we put into every pair, whether it he
Kryptoks or less expensive lenses, meets with the aproval
justly due. \V*e thank you.

foot, together and threw him head
foremost on the block. Then the ex
ecutioner, just as in the old days,
raised the headsman's ax and with
one stroke brought it down against
the prisoner’s neck. Schumann's head
rolled into the sand. One of the
fiistants lifted it up and plueed it in
a coffin, into which the others lifted
the body.
Only one newspaper commented on
this crude execution; that was the
Freiheit, which said: "In Germany, u
democratic republic, justice still fol
lows the mctjmds of tin* Middle Ages.
The present day is reprc»M*itted solely
by the dress coat of tlie exocut loner,,
which covers tin* brutality of the
