Measured Waterspouts.
It Is rarely that an opportunity o<v
curs to make a truly scientific obser
vation of a waterspout. Yet an engi

bad what Is said to be u unique ex
perience of this kind off the coast of
New South Wales.
• Fourteen complete waterspouts
formed ofT the shore where he was
at work with a theodolite, and he
made careful measurements of them.
The largest spout consisted of two
cones, connected by a pipeshaped
spout. The top of the upper cone,
which was Inverted, was 15,014 feet
nbove the sea. Each cone was about
100 feet In diameter at the base, di
minishing gradually until It merged In
to the spout. The length of y»e cones
was about 2. r »0 feet ench, leaving 4,500
feet for the length of the spout con

Fast Boats in 1840.
Although the Cunard line operated
the first regular pussonger schedule
bn the Atlantic ocean, Inuuguruted by
the Britannia In 1840, the Savannah,
an American ship, was the first steam
vessel to make the crossing, depend
ing, according to the records, more
•upon her sails than her engines, which
ran for less than 100 hours. She was
built in New York city and sailed from
Savannah for Liverpool on Muy 25,
1819, arriving 85 days later.
The Royal William, built at Three
Rivers, near Quebec, made the entire
voyage under steam In 1833. Her first
trip from Quebec to Loudon consumed
40 days. The Britannia’s maiden trip
from Liverpool to Boston in 1840 was
made In 14 days and 8 hours. Her sis
ter ship, the Acadia, crossed from Liv
erpool to Halifax in the same year in
11 days and 4 hours. The next year
she mude this voyage in 9 days and 20
hours* a record which stood for mauy
