MANCHURIA.
ft'Win ri:wf mw Important to Kl»-
t«ry In ttio Near k-utm-c.
A wny on the extremely opposite olid
to ours of the great Kutasian coMtinout
la a country to which only too little at¬
tention felt* an yet been paid, and which
tin acoonaft jf its wealth, 4tu favorable
natural position and tlie intelligence of
its inhabitants will attraet'to itself a
yearly increasing notice from Europe
and play no insignificant part in the
history of the next few decades. The
recent march of events lias shown two
rising powers pressing round -Manchu¬
ria and threatening to contest its pos
session with the seemingly dormant
Chinese. If Manchuria were such a
wretchedly poor country as, for instance,
Khiva, Merv and Turkestan and others
which have fallen to the Jot mf the Rus¬
sians, comparatively little attention
Deed be paid to the progress of events
in that distant quarter of the world. It
would matter but little to other Euro¬
pean nations whether the Russian or
Japanese did or did not take .the coun¬
try. But Manchuria is no sucii dew rt
country, it ,is, on the contrary.,;» coun¬
try of eaaeediug riehwss unthsf promise
scarcely iiess than that of the Transvaal
itself and compared to which the whole
of 'central Africa, from Uganda to
Khartum, is of paltry insignificance.
The timber alone iu the vast virgin for¬
ests which clolho the hillsides over
thousands of square miles must be
worth many millions; for this timber
is of stbe most valuable kind, and be¬
sides the ordinary pines, which are
common all over the world, ond which
being fast growing are easily replaced
when cut down, there are immense
quantities of bard timber—of oak and
elm 'and walnut—to replace which a
century (is'required, aud the quantity of
svhiob in the world is rapidly diminish¬
ing. Manchuria is equally rich in its
production of cereals, and iu the south¬
ern portion of such crops as indigo aud
tobacco.
Buch being the climate, the nature of
the country, its soil aud productions,
the inhabitants, as might bo expected,
ore a strong, hardy, vigorous race, and
from the glens of Manchuria have is-
sued three successive waves of conquest
which have overrun the whole of China,
The uumbers-of the original inhabitants
have beets .augmented by streams of im-
'migrants from China proper, and these,
though -slightly less robust than the
original Mantchoos, are yet of good aud
sound physique. They aro the very re-
verse of impulsive—cool, calculating,
(irovidont end so economical that not
wen the -manure from off the roads if
allowed to bo wastial, aud the boat of
the fire required for cooking purposes is
carefully utilized by means of 'flues to
•warm the whole house. Their industry
is apparent in the care'bestowed upon
their fields. In the summer they work
from dawn till sunset, with a brief in¬
terval for the midday meal, and in the
winter they start hours before daybreak
on their long carrying journeys. They
.are brave and little'given to mirth, on
'the whole Law abiding, amenable to con-
.troi aud to the restraints of social life.
if not particularly warm in their devo-
.tiou to theiT children and to their par
ente, at any rate they are cot absolutely
callous, and, though any active benevo-
lence is not very appureut, there are, on
the other hand, few symptoms of active
malevolence.—Captain Younghusband

1808 Combinations.
& ’German statistical scientist, in an
'article in the Magdeburg Zeituug, calls
attention to the reuuirkable attributes
of the year 1898. Ko man iu the pres¬
ent generation has lived or will live
under such peculiar circumstances, a
condition that has not appeared since
the until year 1GCI and will not appear again
the year 2119, People imbued

As a starter, the numeral lb Jo can
bo divided by 13, and the four figure*
added together give 26, wbioh can alsc
be divided by 13. The numeral of the,
.year 1898 also belongs to the romarK-
able group of four sided numbers, of
which only eight have existed since the
birth of Christ, 1898 being the ninth.
Take 1898, for example; subtract the
first figure from the third and the value
of the second aud fourth aro received,
Tbese peculiar year numbers have been
1010, 1121, 1232, 1343, 1454, 1565,
1676, 1787 and now 1898. The Iasi
time the peculiar condition of 13 exist¬
ed was in 1661. This could evenly be
divided by 13, and the fignrea 1, 6, 5,

‘Hererlltary Longevity.
Tbo Newcastle Chronicle givos an in¬
stance vt longevity in a family which
it would be difficult to pahiliel. The
Rev. T. Hooper, rector of Castle Combe,
Wilts, died in i 851 at the ago of 77.
His wife died at the age of 90. They
bad 14 children. The eldest died in
January last at the age of 84. He wa!
rector of Midburst. Five others are still
alive. They are aged 98, 89, 82, 78 aud
73 respectively. Longevity In the fain-

How tb« Man Hull Cla«nlflpd Hi*
FrJcntlH* FriciulH.
A man named Hull ventures to re¬
mark as follows on the humble propen¬
sity for punning:
“There was a time wbrai I rather en¬
joyed (being mutlu aei]uaiuted with my
friends’ friends, hut ilhat was when 1
was much younger ami quite uusopbis
ticated. 1 win ignorant, too, of the fact
that nine out <of every ten humans are
born humorists. When these jokers first
began to pick on me, 1 ascribed tbeii
idiotic levity to their desire to appear
agreeable, 'but as the uiouotouy of the
thing grow upon me 1 gradually became
soured. This has passed, however, and
I now derive .considerable amusement,
from a system formulated some time
since by which I group new acquaint¬
ances ocoordiug to the joke they spring.
The first of these groups, and by far
the strongest numerically, includes the
gentleman who invariably remarks:
‘Mr. JI.ull—ohl Glad to knowyqu. Are
you the hull thing that I have imard sri
much about?’ This extraordinary dis¬
play of keen wit is usually followed by
a hurst of fiendish laughter which is
wonderfully soothing to me.
“In the second group I have placed
the fellow who asks, with the air of
one rtilieviug of eomethiug
purely original, HI am proprietor of
Hull House.
"The third group oontains the chap
who ®uppose8 that I‘must know bow
to hull corn, of course bo, ha, hat
<th is-followed by a dry wink.
"In the final group there are several
who are c-ot met with as ofteu as iu the
first three. <>m wants to know what re-
lutiou I t»ui to the hull of a ship. An
wther makes some remark about know-
.iug a relative of mine, Mr. Peanut
tiull, while still another assures me,
witli a tamiUar tap on the shoulder,
that the ‘hull is always better than the
half.’ Most of these public entertainers
either smile grimly or langh immoder¬
ately at their exhibitiens, aud many
wonder, no doubt, why I don’t see the
point.
