Storioa of Genoral Leo.
Soon after Genoial Lee went to
Lexington, Va., he was offered the
presidency of an insurance company
at a salary of $10,000, says a writer
in the Ladies’ Home Journal, lie
IV MS at that time receiving only
$8,000 as president of the Washing-
ton and Lee University. “Wo do
not want you to discharge any du-
ties, General,” said the agent; “we
simply wish the use of your name;
that Will abundantly compensate
us.” “Excuse me, sir,” was
prompt and decided rejoinder; “I
cannot consent to receive pay for
services 1 do not render.” Nearly
every mail brought him similar
positions, and just a short wdiile
before his death a large and wealthy
corporation in New York City
offered him $50,000 per annum to
become its president. But he re-
fused all such offers and quietly pur-
sued his chosen path of duty.
It was General Lee’s custom to
leave his tent door open in the
ing for a sprightly hen that had gone
into the egg business promptly and
thus had saved her head. When
she stepped in General Lee would
put aside his work and walk post
cliferentlally upon the outside until
her cackle announced the mysteries
of egg-laying at an end. She roosted
and rode in his wagon, was an eye¬
witness of the battles of Chancel-
lorsville and Gettysburg, and was
finally sacrificed upon the alter of
hospitality at Orange Court House,
in 1804.
A month or so after his surrender
Gen. Lee went one day to the store
near his home near Powhatan
county, Virgina, which served also
as the postoffiee. Everybody in
town was instantly eager to see him,
and in a few moments the store was
crowded. The General was talking
with the proprietor about crops and
other matters, and appeared utterly
unconscious of the fact that the
residents was due solely to his
prensence. Suddenly he realized
that everybody was whtching him
and modestly said; “But I see I am
keeping yon from many customers.
Harden me!” and at once withdrew.

It seems to us that our own people
are not the great corn bread eaters
they used to be. Batter or egg and
certain cakes are still in vogue, but
the honest and homely corn none,
the corn dodger and the hoecake are
not as popular as they used to be.
As for the ash cake, the cooking of
it has become a lost art almost. We
charge this change, in part at least,
to the introduction even in the most
country homes of the modern cook¬
ing stove and range. It takes a
great big open fire place and a south¬
ern negress. with a red bandanna on
her head, to make prime corn bread.
Nor will any meal but water ground
meal serve the best purpose. Steam
power meal is tabooed.—Richmond
Dispatch. The Dispatch man should
visit southern or southwest Georgia
and disabuse his mind of the error
he has dropped into. Here he will
find that the good old pone corn
bread he laments the absence of,
cooked to a turn, and we dare say
the ash cake could be put in evidence
in all its delisciousness if called for.
He may speak for Virginia, but not
for Georgia. May the shadow of
our good old pone corn bread never
grow less.
