Three melons of the “Triumph”
variety have so far been gathered
from the Dispatch orphanage patch.
They weighed respectively 52, 38
and 43.1 pounds, or an aggregate of
1334 pounds.
Mrs. T. W. EJarbec and her hand¬
some baby arrived here from Ox¬
ford, Fla., on Wednesday of last
week, on a visit to relatives, and
will return early next week.
Mrs. D. It. Henderson, with her
two. pretty children, arrived Monday
from Oxford, ’ Fla., and will make a

Mr. D. Garrison sold to Paulk
& Co., a few daysago,tw'o middlings
that weighed CO pounds each. The
weie part of an eighteen-months’
old pig.
The other day a hen at the Ensign-
Oskamp mill caught and killed a
twenty-inch black snake, then, to
make sure of her work, swallowed
the reptile.
Mr. Rilev R. Dorminey, was in
Ocilla Tuesday afternoon shaking
hands with his many friends. Riley
looked as serious as if the license
had already been purchased.
All the standard brands of eye¬

Mr. George Goethe and mother,
Mr. and Mrs. R. V. Paulk and Mr.
and Mrs. W. M. Harris left for
Tybee Monday morning to enjoy
the surf bathing for a few days.
Miss Dora Paulk, after a visit of
several weeks to Mrs. W. II. Ty-
gart, at Nashville, returned home
Sunday, accompanied by Mrs. Ty-
gart, who will visit relatives here
till after the yearly meeting.
Mrs. A. E, Hobbs left Monday
for Helena, to visit her brothe.i,
Mr. Charley Sikes, who has tyhoid
fever, and who was critically ill.
Tuesday,Mrs. Hobbs wrote her chil¬
dren that he was improving.
When it comes to line yields of
corn, Billy Fletcher, Ben Drew,
Judge Hogan, Judge Clements,
Judge Dan Tucker, Henry T. Fletch¬
er, and Geo. W. Handley are in the
front line.
The third quarterly conference
for Abbeville and Ocilla charge will
he held here on Sunday after next,
29th inst. Rev. M. A. Morgan,
presiding elder, will preach morning
and, night.
Mr. J. A. Alison will start up his j
big mill at Mystic August 1st.
Mrs. J. D. Holt, of Moultrie, vis- .
ited*relatives and ifiends in Mystic
and Whitley this week.
Mr. George W. Stubbs died of
paralysis at his home near Abbeville
last Sunday morning.
It is hinted that there will be a
fish fry about six miles east of town
some time next week. “Speed” the

Mrs. Dr. Julian, of Irwinville,
was called by atelegrm yesterday to
Oglethorpe on account of the serious
illness of her brother.
’Squire J. H. McNeese brought
us two turnip beets Wednesday that
beat all the beets we have seen this
year. Thank you.
We are indebted to Mr. Harvey
Scott for a sack of delicious Elberta
peaches Wednesday, No finer
peaches than the Elbertas are grown.
Mr. S. I. Watson and Miss Jennie
Lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Moses Lee, were married at tbe home
of the bride’s parents in South Ber¬
rien recently.
Mr. Lucius Paulk yanked a water-
termelon out of his patch last week
that weighed 55 pounds. It was
not a “Triumph”—just an every¬
day sort of melon, but it beat our
“Triumph” three pounds.
Miss Bettie Luke passed through
Oeilla Wednesday afternoon en
route to Irwinville from Shepherd,
Ga., where she had been visiting j
her sister, Mrs. J. S. Lott, several
weeks. We are glad to learn that
Mrs. Lott lias recovered from her
recent illness.

Messrs. Z. J. and I. J. Bussell at¬
tended the birthday 'celebration of
their brother, Mr. W. A. Bussell,
near Abba, Wednesday. On that
day Mr. Bussell reached the 56th
mile-post in life’s journey, and cele¬
brated the event With a line dinner.
A large number of relatives were
pesent.
Air. J. A. Wilks, of Coffee county,
was in Ocilla a.ahorttimo yesterday,
and handed in some oil for the Dis¬
patch machinery. He reports too
much rain in his county.
Mr. J. 11. liar ley, one of Fitzger¬
ald’s foremost citizens, spent part
of Tuesday in Ocilla in the interest
of the Fitzgerald cotton factory.
This was Air. Harley’s first visit to
Ocilla and he spoke some nice words
about the town.
Mr. Alonzo Paulk brought us a
sack of the largest and best flavored
peaches. Saturday we have seen this
year. They were of the Elberta va-
riety, and, mixed with some sugar
and cream, created a fine impression
in the orphanage. Alany thanks.

kindly consented to run a train to
Brushy Creek church Sunday, to en¬
able those who cannnot procure
teams to attend the meeting. Train
will leave Ocilla at 8:30, and will re¬
turn at the close of service.

Dr. G. H. Macon, of Ocilla, paid
a visit to Abbeville yesterday. There
is some talk ot the Doctor coming
back here to locate permanently.
Abbeville’s gates are wide open to
the Doctor and will gladly welcome
him back should he conclude to re¬

Mr. 0. L. Purvis will leave soon
for Senoa., Ga., to take a business
course in the Georgia Telegraph and
Railroad Business School at that
place. Mr. Purvis is a young man
of energy and is adopting the right
course to achieve success in life’s
battle. May his highest hopes be
fulfilled.
Mr. J. A. J. Henderson has sold
the wooden store and residence com¬
bined, which stands just in the rear
of his brick store, to Mr. G. F. Mc-
Gowen who is preparing to move it
to his lots nearly opposite the present
site of the building,and will convert
it into a nice two-story residence of
ten or more rooms.
Mr. N. A. Arnold has sold his
possessions in and near Ocilla and
left Wednesday for his plantation in
Calhoun county. Mr. S. E. Cole-
man purchased his residence, Mr.
J. II. Powell his livery stable buikl-
ing, and Mr. W. N. Fivcasb his
farm near town. The aggregate
amount paid him was §1,100
The barbecue, given by the col¬
ored people in Ocilla last Saturday
was an excellent one and was well
attended. They had a table set apart
for their white friends and quite a
number responded to tbe invitation.
Colored people came from long dis¬
tances to attend “the ’cue, and we
never saw a more orderly gathering
of people any where. When the ex¬
ercises of the day, which included
speaking, base ball, etc., were over,
the big crowd quietly dispersed to
their homes. The whole thing was
a credit to the managers and the
colored people who attended.
