The crop of cassava around San¬
ford is expected to be large. The
cassava is now from three to five
feet high. The Planters Manufactu¬
ring Company has about 700 acres
under cultivation, and all their plan¬
tations are in good condition.
There are also nearly 500 more acres
in cultivation in that section. Capt.
B. O. Whitner has thirty-five acres
which is growing finely. The Plant¬
ers {Manufacturing Company employ
a large number of men. This is the
largest and most extensive factory
in Florida, and its promoters aie
energetic men.
If you have a baby in the house
you will wish to know the best way
to check any loosness of the bowels,
or diarrhoea so common to small chil¬
dren. O. P. M. Holliday, of Doming
Ind, who has an eleven mouths’ old
child,says: “Through the months of
J une and July our baby was teething
took a running off of the bowels and
sickness of the stomach. His bow¬
els would move from five to eight
times a day. I had a bottle of
Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and
Diarrhoea Remedy in the house and
gave him four drops in a teaspoon
ful qf water and ho got better at
once.” For sale by Ocilla Drag Co.
Mr. E. L. Godkin, formerly edi¬
tor of the New York Post(Ind.)inan
interview on the politicial situation
says in part: “What we need in
this country more than anything else
is a large body of men who will keep
to the same idea several years in suc¬
cession. Consider the unsteadiness
of Senator Hoar, the ridiculousness
of Lodge and the prattle of that up¬
start Roosevelt, the Rough Rider.
It grieves me when I hear the ap¬
plause which.greets Roosevelt. Why
is it that so many attach importance
to Roosevelt and consider him a
statesman and soldier? I cannot
understand it. It shows a marked
decline of public sentiment. T fear
for my country. Mark me, Roose¬
velt won’t last long. There will he
a collapse shortly,”
BLICHT IN PEAR TREES.
And How it Can be Prevented The
Only Known Successful Remedy.
It has been stated many times by
those who are supposed to know all
about pear culture that there is no
known preventative of blight m pear
trees, and that after the disease once
gets a hold in an orchard the trees
might as well be cut down and used
as firewood.
W bile this is partially true, it does
not necessarily follow that the dis-
case is obliged ever to get the dreaded
start. It can be prevented, onlya
little energy and a few simple tools
being required to reach the desired
end. ‘While hundreds of pear or¬
chards in this section of Georgia have
been partially or wholly ruined by
blight, there are a few whose pres-
ent condition is all that could be de-
sired.
Mr. J. M. Tift has on his
Hill place, a mile east of Flint river,
an orchard containing 4,000 LeOonte
pear trees, and there is not a dis¬
eased one in the entire lot. The
orchard is a truly beautiful one, and
its value is increasing every year.
qqf t interestingly explains how
hc has kept the drea ded blight out
0 p pj g treeS) and we give his expeii-
once with the hope that it may prove
of value to some of our readers.
Mr. Tift’s success is due entirely
to a strict adherence to two rules:
lie has never planted in his orchard
any crops which would draw their
nourishment from the ground, only
broadcasting an occasional crop of
peas, the latter plant drawing its
nourishment from the air and great¬
ly enriching the soil. In addition
to the above, ho lias regularly “cut
hack” his trees. Every year the
growing limbs have had several
inches pruned olf of their ends, the
result being that while the trees are
not as large as some several years
younger, they are strong, healthy
arid thick with foilageevery spring.
The blight has never molested them.
Occasionally a withered twig will
appear, but it is promptly cut off
and thrown away. The healthy con¬
dition of the trees, as a result of the
cutting back process, enables them
to withstand all manner of disease,
and it would be impossible to find a
more beautiful or promising or¬
chard. Mr. Tift lias just finished
gathering and selling six ear loads
of fine pears from liis orchard. He
placed them on the ears at small ex¬
pense and received from the buyers
an amount per bushel which left him
a good margin of profit, lie says
he would much rather have an or-
chard of fine pears than of peaches,
judging from the experience of fruit
men during the last few seasons.—

Story of a Slave.
To be bound hand and foot for

the worst form of slavery. George

Building Cotton (Wills.
The organization of new cotton
mills in the South during the last
three months, while of course not
as active as during the preceding
three months, has been pushed with
much vigor, says the Baltimore Man¬
ufacturer’s Record. As in the first
three months of the year, the last
quarter shows a steady tendency to¬
wards the diversification of cotton
manufacturing and building of mills
equipped for finer goods. Estab¬
lished mills that have been notedly
successful continue the enlargement
of their operations by building new
mills or extending their present
plants. Taking the mills definitely
organized, and omitting all that have
simply been projected, but the con¬
struction of which has not yet been
assured, and including spindles to
addod t0 m, Hs already established
the total for the first six months of
the year is as follows:
Spindles.
Alabama.......... .......7K,I>40
Georgia.............. ......102,428
Mississippi.......... .......41,240
North Carolina..... ......152,052
South Carolina...... ......340,252
Tennessee........... .......28,500
Texas................ .......35,350
Total 870,308
Of entirely new mills to be built
by new companies, eighty-nine have
been reported since January 1,
while a number of companies have
been organized which have not been
included in this list, since they have
not yet commenced the work of
struction. The capital involved in
the addition to the South of 810,000
spindles, being the actual progress
made in mill building since January
1, represents an investment of be¬
tween $20,000,000 and $25,000,000.
A Minister’s Good Work.
“I had a severe attack of billious
colic, got a bottle of Chamberlain’s
Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Rem¬
edy, took two doses and was entirely
cured,” says Rev. A. A. Power, of
Emporia, Kan. ‘ ‘My neighbor across
the street was sick for over a week,
had two or three bottless of medi¬
cine from the doctor. He used them
for three or four days without relief,
then called in another doctor, who
treated him for some days and gave
him no releaf, so discharged him. I
went over to see him the next morn¬
ing. He said his bowels were fn a
terrible fix, that they had been run -
rung off so long that it was almost
bloody tlux. I asked him if he had
tried Chamberlain’s Colic, Colera
and Dirrhoea Remedy and he said,
‘No.’ I went home and brought him
my bottle and gave him one dose;
told him to take another dose in
fifteen or twinty minutes if he did
not find reliaf, but betook no more
and was ehtirly cured. I think it
is the best medicine I have ever

Timely information given Mrs.
