Ella Wheeler Wilcox.
She Didn’t Enjoy the Sermon.
A funny tiling happened to a young
5ady of the town. She was attend¬
ing church Sunday evening, and sit-
ding just ir. front of her she saw a
tall, handsomely dressed stranger
with a piece of white lint, or ravel¬
ing, hanging over his coat collar.
Being a lady of an accommodating
•disposition—one of the warm-hearted
■whole-souled girls who grow to be
motherly old ladies, a friend to
•everybody in town—she thought how
glad she would be if some kind-
hearted girl would do as much for
her father if he would come to church
with a raveling hanging down his
back. Besides the thing worried
her and ruined the otherwise im¬
maculate appearance presented by
the broad neck and well-built should¬
ers of the stranger, so as the congre¬
gation rose for prayer she concluded
to pick it off.
Carefully raising her hand she
gave a twitch, but there was more
of it than she supposed, and a foot
•or more of the thread appeared. Set¬
ting her teeth she gave another pull
■and about a yard or more of that
thread hung down his back. That
was embarrassing, but with a grim
determination to do or die she gave
another yank and found she was un¬
raveling his undershirt. It is need¬
less to say that her embarrassment
was then so painful that chloroform
could not have alleviated her suffer¬
ing nor a pint of powder hidden her
blushes when the gen tie fn an turned
with an enquiring look to sec what
was tickling his back.—Marrietta

iSaved His Dog.
A boy about ten years old went
to the central Kan police station in Ivan- j
sas City, , one day last week j
leading a line shepherd dog by a
short piece of rope tied to his collar, ■
relates the Kansas City Star. The
boy’s face was red and swollen and
he was crying.
“Well, well, well, what’s the mat- j
ter here?” asked a big policeman, ]
stopping down, and looking into the |
boy’s face.
It seemed a long time before he
could stop crying.
‘(Please, sir,” he sobbed, “iny
mother is too poor to pay for a li¬
cense for Shep, and 1 brought him
here to have you kill him.”
Then he broke out in another wail
that was heard all through the city
building. Shep stood there mute,
motionless, looking up into the face
of his young master. A policeman
took out bis bankerchief to blow his
nose and the desk sergeant went out
into the hall absent-mindedly whistle-
ing a tune which nobody ever heard
before, while the captain remem¬
bered that he must telephone some¬
body. Then Chief McFarland led
the boy to the door, and, patting
him on his head,.said kindly:
“There, little fellow. Don’t cry
any more; run home with your dog.
I wouuldn’t kill a dog like Shep for
-a thousand dollars,”
“Oh, thank you, sir.” They were
tears of joy now, He bounded out
into the street and ran off towards
his home with Shep prancing along
and jumping up and trying to kiss
the boy’s face. It was hard to tell
which was the happiest, the boy or
the dog.

The Baltimore Sun (Dem.) says:
“The elimination of the illiterate
negro vote in North Carolina will
prove a blessing to both races. It
will insure honest ami efficient
government by those best fitted to
control the affairs of the state. It
will prevent friction between the
races and will lead m the end im¬
proved relations between white and
blacks, there is no disposition in
North Carolina to treat the negro un¬
kindly. His best friends in that state
are among the most ardent advocates
of the amendment adopted yesterday.
He will he educated and cared for
in the future, as in the past, by those
who voted to disfranchise illiterate
membersof his race. The adoption of
the amendment will prove benefi¬
cial to North Carolina in more than
a political way. With tlie friction
between the races reduced to a min¬
imum and white supremacy assured
the material developement of the
state will be greatly promoted.”
We guess we are wrong about
there being educated hogs on the

more.—Douglas Breeze. We can go
