It is a little unusual but since
the Hale storm in Atlanta Li
thoniahasbeen without a bank.
Cleveland is now a private
citizen, and if he is as proud to
be relieved of the duties of the
presidency of this great nation
as some people are that he has'
been relieved, then he is the
happiest mortal in all vhis broad
land.
The Atlanta ministers seem to
have discarded the Bible for the
time being and take for a text,
upon which they discourse with
much feeling, Alanta society.
Their sermons recently have
been almost as sensational as
the Looking Glass.
it is now President McKinly,
and the country should be at
rest. “Restored confidence” is
tbe next thing on the list and
it should not be long delayed.
McKinley’s inaugural address
was by no means a bad one
when we consider his high pro¬
tective republican views. It is
acknowledged that he is a
good man and we have no rea¬
son to suspect that he will not
make a good president,
Otis Smith, the Atlanta em¬
bezzler, was a “lucky dog.”
His friends bought him out of
jail and he left for parts un¬
known. Two or three days la¬
ter the grand jury returned a
true bill against him. It is
said that young Smith has gone
to Africa.
Congress will meet in extra
session on the 16th of this
month. Presidebt McKinley
evidently wants assistance in
the management of the nations
affairs. He is not thinking of
it, perhaps, but he is throwing
trump cards to the Washing¬
ton hash houses.
In Forsyth county last week
a man died and two of his
neighbors volunteered to sit up
with the coipse. Duiing the
night both were taken sick and
died within twenty-four hours.
AU three were buried from the
same house. —Ex.
Now that he is on his own
time and iu the possession of a
comfortable amount of ready
cash, it is to be supposed that
ex-president Cleveland will in¬
dulge his hanker)ug for duck
Bhooting to his entire satisfac¬
tion.
Editor Estill, of the Savan¬
nah Morning News, got married
the other day. The next on
the list should be Glesener, of
the Griffin News, and Morrow,
of the Jonesboro Enterprise.
The inaugural ball is sa ; d to
have oeeu a wonderfully bril
liant affair—all of them are
that.
It is now Senator Steve Clay.
Electric Lights
A few remarks on the subject
of electric lights for Conyers
will be appropriate just at this
time. It, is conceded that the
town needs them and we sup¬
pose there is not a man within
the city limits but that under¬
stands we have a splendid op¬
portunity to secure them, The
time for action is here and the
opportunity now at hand may
not come to us again.
The city council is now con¬
sidering a proposition from a
private company to light the
city, and it is highly propable
that the proposition will be ac¬
cepted. This proposition is
made with the proviso that a
certain number of incandescent
lights are to be sold to private
citizens. It will be seen, there¬
fore, lhat the question is virtu¬
ally left with the peoplo at last.
We are glad to be able to an¬
nounce that many have exhib¬
ited their enterprising spirit
and subscribed for lights ea¬
gerly. They realize that it will
be the best thing Conyers ever
invested in and they are anx¬
ious for the lights to be secur¬
ed. This is highly commendable.
There are other citizens, ful¬
ly as important, who are not so
enthusiastic. They do not
oppose the lights but are not,
at this time, giving their sup¬
port and encouragement to the
enterprise. This is deplored.
The Weekly is for anything
that will benefit Conyers. We
believe that electric lights will
benefit the town and prove of
great convenience to all the
people of the town. The Week¬
ly has subscribed for lights and
will do ail in its power to aid
and encourage the enterprise.
We believe that it is the pa¬
triotic duty of every man iu
town to aid in rescuing our city
from darkness.
Tho Mayor and Council will
do their part in this work of
deliverance, and it only re¬
mains for each individual to
do his duty to the town.
It may be of interest to some
to know that within the past
few days Barnesville has turn¬
ed on the current and is now
in the full enjoyment of the
brilliant light. We admit that
we are envious, and that until
Corijers takes this advanced
step we will feel no relief.
We desire in conclusion to
urge upon the entire town that
our only chance is now before
us snd should we let it slip by
we can only hope to continue
indefinitely in darkness.
