Habitat volunteers lift the first truss in place on Monroe County Habi
tat for Humanity’s next house. Getting the trusses up on top and the
decking down is a major step to getting the house “in the dry”. The
Pennington brothers directed the volunteers.
Near the end of a hard day the Pennington brothers and volunteers
work diligently to finish the rood decking. Unless more funds are
raised the house will not go beyond getting it in the dry. The house
will be in the dry by Christmas.
Habitat’s Christmas wish list

Habitat for Hu
manity has de
veloped a wish
list for Christ
mas. Its fulfillment, will make
it possible for a Monroe County
family to realize the dream of
home ownership.
Enough money has been
raised to completely put
the house in the dry before
Christmas. But Habitat
needs to raise money for
the next steps of construc
tion. Since Habitat is a
cash and carry organiza
tion, construction must
stop when funds run out.
The Christmas wish for
Monroe County Habitat is
that enough people or
groups will pitch in to help
finish the current house.
“Monroe County Habitat
has always held firmly to
the belief that if everyone
does a little bit then a lot
can be accomplished and
no great effort is experi
enced by anyone,” says
director of development
Walt Walker.
Building co-chair Julius
Stroud agrees, adding
“When we complete the
work with the material we
currently have, we will be
close to half way through.
If the money is available
we can move ahead at a
good pace and this house
will be ready for its fami
ly”
Stroud and Glover Stuart
have listed the following as
items they need; vinyl sid
ing, plumbing, cabinets,
insulation, septic tank,
floor covering, sheetrock,
wiring lighting and bath
room fixtures. “With
regard to cost, we have
divided these items by five
and our wish is that five
people will donate that
amount so we can finish
the house,” stated Walker.
Habitat’s wish list, which
is one fifth of the total cost
of each item: vinyl siding-
$321; plumbing-$100; cabi-
nets-$255; septic tank-
$460; sheetrock-$400;.floor
covering-$300; wiring-
$100, insulation-$200;
lighting -$100, bathroom
fixture-$100.
“If five people or five
groups choose each of the
above items and donate
that amount, we will have
a great Christmas and fin
ish this house. Our
Christmas wish will have
come true. However, we
will be most grateful for
any amount.”

Four charged with drugs
BY LAURA THACKSTON
Local authorities arrested four men on
Tuesday, Dec. 9 on drug and obstruction
charges, one of them only after using a drug
dog to chase and comer him in a culvert near
the training center.
According to a sheriffs report, Sgt. Hull
stopped a white Honda Accord traveling
south on 1-75 for tinted windows. A smell of
burnt marijuana was coming from inside the
car and the driver, Kelvin Lumpkin, 20, of
Musella, had bloodshot eyes. Lumpkin said
he didn't own the car, slurred his speech and
failed sobriety tests. He admitted to smoking
marijuana the day before. Meanwhile, a pas
senger, Gregory Turner, quickly exited the car
holding a black bag and fled toward the
training center.
Forsyth officer Gregg Phillips was led by
his K9 to a drainage culvert where they
found Turner hiding. He had shed his jeans
and bag but was arrested. Back at the jail,
Turner admitted the bag was somewhere
near the railroad tracks and apologized for
fleeing. He said the marijuana had been pur
chased in Atlanta and they were on their way
back to Crawford County with the drugs. The
bag was found with drugs inside. Lumpkin
was charged with DUI, possession of mari
juana and obstruction. Passengers Gregory
Turner of Reynolds, Donovan Dugger of Fort
Valley and Marquis Addison of Roberta, all
19 or 20 years old, were charged with
obstruction and possession of marijuana.
Kids
continued from the front
Yule love, beating last
year’s total of $7,000.
Although the toy and
food drive is sponsored by
the senior English classes,
the whole school kicks in.
For weeks, senior sponsor
Pat Busby rings her bell in
the hallways of MP, urging
students to give. And they
always give. The students
donated change and dollar
bills, along with toys and
canned food.
“We were afraid that the
economy would mean less
donations this year,” said
Monroe County Kids Yule
Love coordinator James
Weeks. He said Kids Yule
Love has committed to
help 276 kids this year.
“We were only a third of
the way through our list
when we ran out of toys. I
was afraid there would be
kids with no Christmas
this year. But, not now.”
That news thrilled senior
Brianne Stevenson. This
year’s toy drive was dedi
cated to the memory of her
big brother, Matt, who died
in 2004. Matt was a mem
ber of the Bolingbroke Fire
Dept, and a big supporter
of Kids Yule Love. Brianne
said Matt would be as
proud of her classmates as
she is.
Kids Yule Love founder
Joe Allen attended the pro
gram Friday and congratu
lated MP on a job well-
done.
“The Bulldogs are the
champions,” Allen told the
students. “But the real
winners are the kids who
will wake up Christmas
morning and gifts. That
would not be possible with
out your help.”
The toys and food will be
distributed to local fami
lies on Dec. 19.
