The Coburn Playere.
The Atlanta Athletic Club's country
club at East Lake In arranging for the
Shakespearean festival by the Coburn
players have made a social and artlatlc
Innovation. The entertainment la an
unique one, giving plays of Shakes
peare a* he Intended them to be pre
sented, out of doors on the latvn with
only the trees and shrubbery as scen
ery. The combination of the night with
Its subtle perfume, the forest, lighted
here and there with soft calciums, the
sky with Its twinkling stars overhead,
produce an Illusion so perfect that
when the players appear, one seems to
live with them. In their Joys and tor
rows, instead of being merely a spec
tator at a play. A number of private
boxes are provided In addition to the
regular stating arrangement and many
box parties have been made up for the
entertainment. Judging from Ike In
terest shown this occasion will be the
social event of the summer season at
the club. The plays are “As You,Like
It." on Friday Night; "Twelfth Night'
at the matinee Saturday, and "A Com
edy of Eranrs" Saturday night.
At the Caaine.
Lovers of vaudeville are congratulat
ing themselves on the excellent per
formance that la being furnished fur
this week at the Casino, where one of
the most complete and original vaude
ville hills of the season Is being offered
it the popular summer theater. From
the opening act, with the Holman
brothers, who do some startling acro
batic stunts, to the Anal wind-up. when
Fred St. Onge Ar Co. fairly take the
audience by storm with their marvel
ously skillful and daring bicycle act,
there Is never a dull moment and the
hours of entertainment are over
before one is aware of It. Ocorge Bon.
Ifaee. Jr., an old Atlanta favorite, ntfio
scored heavily here some few years ago
In Comic opera. Is presenting with Ber.
tha AValtsinger a pleasing little sketch
entitled "The Singing Lesson." In this
sketch Miss Waltsslnger sings charm
ingly and George Boniface keeps the
audience In a merry frame of mind. The
wind-up of this sketch Is extremely
funny and sets the audience laughing
Immoderately.
One of the hits of the bill is un
doubtedly the ventriloquist work of
Harry Lester, who should be put down
as one of the most skillful, original and
up-to-date of artists In his line of work.
The quarrel between the figure and
Lester is Inimitable, and later on Les
ter promenades the aisles of the thea
ter, which Is in darkness, while a spot
light Is being thrown on his face, the
flgure la made to sing loudly while,
Lester smokes s cigarette and never
moves a muscle of his face. The open
ing act of Holman brothers Is really
good In this line and furnishes some
acrobatic stunts that startle and amuse.
The entire show from start to finish Is
well balanced and pleasing and should
draw large crowds this week to the
popular Casino.
At Whiti City,
Ever take a trip on the smallest
railroad In Georgia? Better try It. even
tho you can't get a pass nowadays, for
the fare from terminus to terminus Is
but a nickel. It's the White City Lim
ited. and runs from Chnsewood June
tlon clear around the lake, thru Puckett
tunnel and back to the terminus. The
engineer Is bigger thnn his engine, and
as ihe cab Is too small for him. he sits
on top of the locomotive, where he can
lean over and shoo the chickens from In
front of the cowcatcher. That's Just
one of the bits of fun at White City.
The toboggan, the merrytgo-round, the
Ferris wheel and the great circle swing
are others, while the boats on the lake
offer an unusual treat to Atlantans.
Wedemeyer’s band gives conrerts every
afternoon and night!
At Pones DeLeon.
A display of Japanese day flrewnrks
every afternoon Is the latest and most
attractive of the recent announcements
coming from the management of Ponce
DeLeon Park.
A large supply of these fireworks has
been ordered, shipped and received, and
are now on the grounds raady for the
explosion. Every afternoon at Interval?
of a few minutes there will be a dls-
plav out In the open of the fireworks.
Only once before—on July 4 last—has
Atlanta had the opportunity to see this
latest wrinkle In the fireworks line.
These fireworks are not like anything
else In this line.
In the first place, they are shot nut
of a motor, which sends them 340 feet
In the air. Alt of them are the shape
and about the sits of an ordinary pear
until they burst—and then they are all
shapes and sites.
Opening, some of them become life-
sited men and women, some with um
brellas. walking sticks, hats or other
paraphernalia In their handa. Some
when opened prove to be elephants,
rows, horses oa other animals, all llfe-
slte.
These men and women and animals
of Ihe flrewnrks kingdom romp about
In the air. gyrating about In amusing
ways and slowly descendjng. It It a
source of great tnjoyment to watch
them In tt#lr earthward career.
Some of the flrewnrks prove to be
bags of russet and silver and gold con
fetti. which sprinkle out and fall like
•now. shimmering and spangling In the
rays of the sun.
There will be a free display of fire
works at Ponce DeLeon every after
noon from now on for several weeks.
