MINNIE MONK’S MERRY MATINEE;
M’MILLAN’S MASCOT MAKES MISCHIEF
Thli, then, !( the tale of Minnie,
the Monk—or perhaps narrative
would be a better word, for Minnie
ha, nothing behind her but the mem
ory of a forenoon's fun. She occu

Atabama-st„ stopped twenty-eight
messenger boye on their way with
rush telegrams, made eleven travelers
miss their trains, caused a temporary
cessation of business on both sides
the etreet and gave two hundred and
forty-three persons a severe crick In
their necks.
Minnie Is a natlve'of Ceylon, but Is
temporarily sojourning at McMillan's
seed store, 23 South Broad-st., Wed
nesday morning she unhooked her
chain, hung It on a nail,'registered
off and made her exit thru a rear
window to avoid embarrassing good

Messenger boy No. *43 was mak

telegram under his arm. Immersed
In the eleventh chapter of “Teddy In
the Tropics, or the Chimpanzee's Re

“Suddenly a shadow fell across the
path and our hero looked up to see a
frightful hairy beast peering over
the ledge," read Willie. Then he
stumped his toe, glanced upward and
let out a yell that reached clear back
to the office.
“Jumpin' Jerry, dere he Is now!” he
yelled. Instinctively looking for a
friendly banyan tree to climb. But
there was nothing near but a tele
graph pole, and there was Mlnnlei
nonchalantly peering over the roof
of a livery stable.
Minnie sat calmly upon the ledge
of loose bricks and meditatively gath
ered fleas, which she examined crit
ically before cracking. Ever and.
anon she gazed upon the rapidly
growing throng below and bestowed
what ehe may have considered an at
tractive gmlle.
When Bob McMillan found that
Minnie had taken Simian leave, he
was deeply touched, so he engaged
the services of a friend and climbed
to the roof, carrying with him a
peach whereby to lure Minnie back to
her chala
Some Thompson-Seton might de
scribe that chaee, might tell In vivid
language l\ow Bob chased Minnie
across the roof and how Minnie
ehaeed Bob up the chimney, how they
waltzed and echottleched about the
eaves, Minnie now. retreating, now
charging with menacing teeth: how
Bob and his friend alternately urged
each other on to the capture and how
each retorted: "Do It yourself, then,,
If you say ehe won't bite.” Some
Dickens might tell of the advice that
floated upward from the street, the
suggestions of salt on her tall (ut

plained), a lasso and a looking glass.
But all things have an end, even a
monkey chase. And when finally
Bob grew too tired to try anything
else and leaned against the parapet
to express his private opinion of
monkeye In general and Minnie In par
ticular, that erratic young mles sur
prised him and the watching crowd
below by confidently climbing Into his
arms and nestling there while he
climbed thru a window from the roof
to restore her to her old perch.
And the busy hum of traffic started
humming again.
