The bill of Mr. Adams stipulates
that pawnbrokers and money lenders
shall not charge mors than 5 per cent
a month on loans, whereas now they
ar>. permitted to charge 1# and 15 per
cent a month and more. The bill has
already been passed by the house by
an overwhelming majority and la now-
up to tha senate. This body. It Is said,
will also pass It by a big majority.
The pawnbrokers and money lenders
Lave given up ell hopo of the driest of
the bill and soy the death knell to their
business has already been sounded.
They say they will be unable to do a
profitable business under the 5 per vent
Ian. and that they will be forced to
dose their doors.
One feature of the situation la now
before the city council. In the shape
of a resolution by Atderinan yullllan
and reported favorably by the tax com

It ts stated, of whether some of the
brokers nnd money lenders will go out
of business at once, or continue until
the first of the year, at which time the
Adams bill will become effective. If
the resolution Is adopted. It la expect
ed that all of these people will take

them declare they are unw illing to pay
for a license for a year, when they are
expectlog to quit anyway on the drat

acted on nt the meeting of council on
Wednesday- afternoon.
A big delegation of the men effected
was present In the council chamber
Tuesday afternoon to watch tha out

up.
Following the meeting of council, a
number of pawnbrokers nnd money
lenders went to the city clerk and naked
that their cheeks, already deposited for
a year’s license, be held up. pending
action bv council on the resolution.
Thev stated that should the resolution
prevail they would then pay only for a
quarterly license.
One of the leading pawnbrokers. In
speaking of the matter. Hid:
