An alligator for the Indianapolis 500-
inilc race winner. That's the stunt that
H C. Bradfield, of the Cole Motor Car
Company, of Indianapolis, and Frank
Lung, secretary and treasurer of the
local Cole Motor Company, is pulling
off. Bradfield secured the alligator at
Alligator .Toe’s farm in Jacksonville
and sent it by express to the Cole Mo
tor Car Company in Indianapolis. He
merely wired his concern, "Am shipping
an alligator. Dangerous."
Bradfield said yesterday that If any
one wanted to carry the alligator as a
mascot in the 500-mlle race he would
be pleased to let them do so.

CHICAGO, May 28.—Because the
kosher butcher "trust" a week ago re
solved not to buy more cattle at the
stockyards, there is a meat famine
among the orthodox Jews here today.
The kosher butchers asserted that
they were forced to pay from 3 to 6
cents a pound more than Gentile butch
ers. The stock they had on hand soon
was exhausted. Then the orthodox
Jews raided the chicken market Now
the available chicken supply has been
exhausted, and even the supply of
smoked fish is gone.
The butchers have locked up their
shops, and the orthodox Jews are with
out meat of any kind.

STRIKE SPREADS
All Important Ports of Kingdom
Hit—Ships Unloaded Under
Police Guard.
LONDON. May 28.—The dock And
transport strike today spread to the
majority of the important seaports of
lhe United Kingdom. In response to
orders from the centi.il quarters of thfe
dock and transport workers, freight
, handlers went out in Liverpool, South
ampton. Glasgow, Bella t. Manchester
and other coast cities. With the spread
of the strike into a national movement
the situation reached its most serious
stage, a? it showed the determination
nf the leaders to put. into execution
their threat to “tie up the kingdom.
This makes more imminent the danger
of a famine.

gist, goes to Washington. D. C., to
morrow with an original idea for ob
taining the 1913 convention of the Na
tional Society tor' the Prevention of
Tuberculosis for Atlanta.
Dr. Smith says that many of the del
. egates protest that it Is too hot in At
. lanta In May for a national convention.
He says that Atlanta's climate is cooler
, than Washington's and that during the
convention he will prove it to the fiele
. gates by posting placards in the con
. vention halt comparing the tempera
tures in Washington and Atlanta at th<*
. same hour.
Unless the Washington temperature
absolutely discourages the delegates.
Dr. Smith says he Is confident Atlanta
will get the next convention
