“HUB” EVANS NOT GUILTY
OF RECEIVING SSO BRIBE

Evans, former chairman of the state
dispensary commission, was declared
not guilty of receiving a bribe by a
jury in the court of general sessions
here. He was accused of having taken
a bribe of SSO from M. A. Goodman, a
liquor salesm in, for whisky orders. It
took the jury only five minutes to
agree Evans is a candidate for at
torney general of the state. He was
prosecuted by J. Fraser Lyon, the pres
ent attorney general, and was defend
ed by E. S. Blease. brother of Governor
Cole L. Blease.

U. S. TEACHERS TO
INSTRUCT CANNING
CLUBS OF GEORGIA
Two thousand members of girls* can-
I ning clubs in Georgia will be instructed
this summer by fifteen voting women
teachers paid bv th* government. These
teachers will Instruct dubs in 25 coun
ties and will teach canning tn more than
2.000 girls. For the last three days the
teachers have been given Instruction at
a conference in Athens by O R Martin,
of the United States department of agri
culture
The w<«rk of the girls* canning clubs is
closely allied to that of the boys* corn
; clubs and is receiving aid from the de
i partment of agriculture.
If the work done this summer brings
good results it is believed the movement
will be carried on next yea r on a larger
| scale and more expensive scale.

RALEIGH. N. .May 30.—Fire at
Belhaven, N. C., did damage es- :
tlmated at $1,000,000. when the plant of
the Interstate Cooperage Company was.
destroyed. It is said that the cooperage .
plant will be rebuilt. There was no I
insurance. The plant of the .John L.
Roper Lumber Company was saved
after hard work by volunteer fire t$ lit
ers.
The greatest loss to the cooperage 1
company was in lumber, 2.500.n0n feet ,
being destroyed. The box factory, lum- ■
her kilns and four box cars were
burned. The cause of the fire has not 1
oeen ascertained.
