Atlanta will have, for at least a
short time, a major general of the Uni
ted States army stationed here ac
cording to the belief at the headquar
ters of the department of the gulf
Major General W. W. Wotberspoon,
promoted yesterday from th,, rank of
brigadier general, probably will be kept
here until after the summer maneu
vers at Anniston. Ala , as he Is in
■ barge of al! arrangements as head of
the department of the gulf.
Where he will go eventually or who
his successor will be is a matter of
speculation and will not be known un
til official orders are issued from Wash
ington. He stands a chance of being
=ent to Washington. New York, West
Point or Texas, to fill one of the va
eancies for which appointments are to
be made.
Major Genera' Wotberspoon's office
is flooded with telegrams from all over
the country today congratulating the
popular nffi, c r on his promotion from
brigadier genera! to the highest rank
in the service. .'alifomla, Washing
ton. D. New York, Savannah and
other points where the officer has been
stationed during his 42 years of active
service and places where he lias friends
were represented in the mass of tele
grams. Numbers of friends whom he

written notes and called them up over
the telephone to express their pleas
ure.
Takes Place of General Grant.
The dispatch notifying General
Motherspoon of his promotion came
from Washington yesterday as follows;

Wotherspoon, now commanding

To be brigadier general. Clar
ence E. Edwards. Colonel George F.
Chase and Colonel E. J. McClern

The nominations will be given to the
-enate Thursdav. The vacancies have
existed for some time. General Woth
erspoon assumes the rank made vacant
by the death of General F. D. Grant.
MANAGER I N. COUCH
OF OCEANIC HOTEL IS
ON VISIT TO ATLANTA
Jesse N. Couch, manager of the Oceanic
hotel at Wrightsville Beach, arrived in
Atlanta Tuesday morning and will remain
a guest of the Majestic until Thursday
night, when he leaves for Wrightsville
over the Seaboard Air Line with a large
party who w’ifl spend the summer at the
Oceanic hotel
Mr. Couch is bubbling over with en
thusiasm about his hotel and Wrightsville
Beach.
With Captain Oscar Salter In charge of
the private pier, the 60-foot launch and
boats, absolute safety is assured, for no
man knows the South Atlantic coast bet
ter than Captain Salter. He also knows
where the fishing is best
Special rates will be given by the
Oceanic from August 15 to October 1. Mr.
Couch will be at the Majestic until
Thursday, where he will make reserva
tions or give any information desired.

INFANT IN PERIL OF
DROWNING IN HOME
In a house at 73 Old Wheat street
the wife and new-born baby of Joe
Matthews are in danger of being
drowned in bed Water has flooded the
•structure since the recent rains began.
.Matthews, who is a negro porter em.
ployed by the H. M. Aahe Company,
says he has appealed to the city in vain
attempts to have the seweri enlarged
so that they will carry off the water.
His wife and the two-day-old infant
are in such condition that they can not
leave the bed about which the water
from the street has swirled for several
days.
Matthews says that unless he can
find some way to drain off the flood
his family will die when another down

CONFIDENT THIS CITY
CAN GET CONVENTION
So certain are leaders of the new pro
gressive party in this city that Atlanta
will be the Roosevelt convention city next
August that they are already planning for
the Auditorium to house the expected
gathering .1.1 St. Julien Yates today
waited upon Wilmer I. Moore, president
of the Chamber of Commerce, and asked
him so the aid of that organization in
bringing the convention here

L. Alonzo Hines, one of the best
known optometrists and opticians in
the South, w ho is the head of the Hines
Optical Company, which has just
opened a modern optical store at 91
Peachtree street, is the inventor of the
Dixie Anger tip eyeglasses and th<=
Hines glass guards, which are sold
throughout the world. Mr.. Hines says
that by the aid of his inventions he has
made it possible for any one to wear
eyeglasses—that they can not slip, tilt
or fall off. and that they w:lll not pinch
or scar the nose, and that the lenses
will always be in one posit'on. For ten
years Mr. Hines has had one of the
largest optica! stores in Savannah,
where he has fitted over 25,000 Geor
gians with glasses. He Is a charter
member of the Georgia State Optical
association and ex-president of the so
ciety.
A delightful excursion will run tn Warm
Springs tomorrow by members of the J
C. Root Camp, No. 80. Woodmen of the
World. Music and dancing have been ar
ranged for, and a fine time is predicted.

A Irwin Almand, one of the best known
young business men of Atlanta, has ac
cepted a- position with the Rhodes-
Wood Furniture Company, where he Is
acting as special representative in the
credit and collection department.
THREE YOUTHS TAKEN
IN RAID ON ALLEGED

What is believed by detectives to be
a dope joint and blind tiger, where
boys use cocaine and drink whisky, has
been uncovered by a raid on an up
stairs room at 50 1-2 Piedmont ave
nue. Three young men—Cliff Brewer,
150 Centra! avenue; Ivan Wlmbish, 169
Chestnut street, and A. J. Fitzgibbon.
IS Boulevard place—will be arraigned
before Recorder Broyles this afternoon
to tell of the mysteries of the room.
The raid wa» made as the result of
a complaint to Chief of Detectives Lan
ford by the son of a prominent Atlanta
man, whose name has been connected
with the place. This same young man
was a star witness a ago
against a downtown druggist who was
convicted of selling cocaine. He told
Judge Broyles at that time that he
wanted to break up the sale of cocaine
in Atlanta in an effort to save himself
and others.
A lot of dope needles, as well as whis
ky, were found by detectives 1n the
room.
AUGUSTA’S $1,250,000
BOND ISSUE CARRIES
AUGUSTA, GA.. June 25. Augusta
voted $1,000,000 bonds for lever purposes,
together with $150,000 for a city hospital
and SIOO,OOO for improved water works. In
a special bond election held here yester
day. A two-thirds vote was required and
the three Issues carried b> about 200 more
than a'two-thirds majority of 2,400 ballots
cast, and 109 more than two-thirds of the
registered vote of the city.
