Advice
brom
the
Poultry
Doctor
Whan is the
poultry business
to be freed from
the evil of "re
touched" photo
graphs for adver
tising purposes?
Untlj it is, poultry
advertising is on
a wrong basis.
Here is the way
the game Is work
pd: A breeder
wants a picture of
a pen for adver
■ -,n;: pulposes. A
photographer will
take pictures of a
batch of pullets and a cock bird or two.
He also takes a picture suitable for a
background. Then the artist begins to
get in his deadly work. He takes the
; enlargements of the photos of the
I poultry, opens a Standard before him
and makes the poultry all over again.
It is surprising how easily he can do
ft. He can take rhe most lop-sided,
snaggle-toothed old apology for a comb
land turn out something that you can't
■ tell from the article prescribed by The
Standard. He can cut off or add on
five or six inches of tail. He can
straighten out or round In a back; In
fact, he ran take a picture of a Black
Lnngshan and convert It into a Rhode
Island Red that would pass muster
anywhere
Artistically 1t is marvellous.
But consider the ethics of the thing.
The re-made birds are plastered on
a fake background The whole is made
into a "half-tone” and stuck In the
advertising. "Here are photographs of
MY birds," says the advertising As a
matter of fact, they are the artist's
birds.
Open any poultry magazine to the
advertising section. Look at the Rhode
Island Red pictures Every back is as
straight as though ' laid off with a
ruler, which it probably was Look at
any White Wyandotte and It's ten to
nne it has a re-made tail. The White
Leghorns have their backs made over.
Ninety-nine combs out of a hundred
are touched up a bit. Some of them
are absolutely made over.
Is this sort of stuff honest?
Possibly, but it’s a corporation varie
ty of honesty.
A man advertises: "When you buy
from us you get eggs laid by these
hens." As a matter of fact there are
not anv such hens.
It Is about the same as though a
man should advertise a house for sale,
showing a picture of a fine three-story
stone mansion, and then when you
bought It. without seeing it (as you
must In almost all cases buy eggs
without seeing the stock), should turn
over to you a six-room, frame, one
story bungalow.
The time must soon come when the
mere use of faked and retouched pho
tographs In magazine advertising will
be taken as prima facie evidence of a
lack of the sort of honesty upon which
a man wishes his poultry transactions
based.
Nn advertiser ever got anything yet
by false representations.
