Newspaper Page TextW.SMS MAN ■ HlTffl W. L. Willingham Advertises Reward for Apprehension of Mysterious Assailant. MACUN, GA., Aug. 9.—A man giv ing his name as W. L. Willingham, of Atlanta, andjgaid to be a well known < itizen here, has offered a reward of $7,500 for the apprehension of the per son w ho struck him, without provoca tion. on Fourth street near the Union d/pot in Macon about 11 o’clock on Wednesday night. He has inserted an advertisement in the local papers, and it is signed “W. L. W." However, he stated at the time that his name was 'Willingham. When asked if there was a mistake in the figures, he declared that $7,500 was cor rect. and said he would pay that sum in cash to any one giving him informa tion sufficient to-convict the person who hit him. Mr. Willingham stated that he was struck in the face by another man whom he did not know, absolute ly without provocation. As the result of the advertisement, the policemen and detectives of Macon have been earnestly working on the ease, but all report so far that they have made no progress. No witnesses can be found who saw one man strike another in the locality at the time named by Mr. Willingham. The affair has aroused great interest here, and many besides the officers of the law are making inquiries about the matter in the hope of earning the exceedingly liberal reward. For the time the question of “Who hit Billy Patterson?” fades into insig nificance besides the more pertinent query of “who struck W. L. W.?’” Efforts to locate a W. L. Willing ham in Atlanta were unavailing. The city and telephone directories fail to show a person of this name. Members of the Willingham family here dis claim any knowledge of the Macon af fair. Work on the enormous plant will be begun Monday on a ten-'acre plot on i North Boulevard, near Piedmont park, adjoining the present transformer plant of the company. Several buildings and about twenty i steel towers for receiving the high ten i sion wires will be erected. . GLYNN TAX RETURNS FOR 1912 SHOW $239,842 GAIN BRUNSWICK. GA., Aug. 9.—Glynn '■ county’s tax returns for 1912 show tax able values of $5,630,934, an increase 1 of $239,842 over 1911. The increaser according to Tax Receiver Dubberly, ’ has been caused mainly by the numer ous small buildings erected during the ■ past year, and has not been the result of any one big enterprise, as was the case in 1911, when the Yaryan Naval Stores Company erected its plant here, . the tax returns of which amounted to i $150,000. Up until noon to ; day 91 bodies had been brought to the • surface from the Loethringen colliery which was wrecked by an explosion yesterday when 650 miners were en tombed. At that hour others of the I miners had been accounted for, but it was believed the death list would go to 400 or more, owing to the impossi bility of getting fresh air into the shaft. Emperor William is at Essen, nine t miles from the scene of the disaster, . and is getting hourly’ bulletins. Subscription for destitute families of the victims has been started.
