TOUR IS FINISHED
Westgard Completes “Over
land Trail” Upon Arrival
in New York.
Second of the three trans-continental
routes being laid out this year by the
touring information board of the Amer
ican Automobile association was com
pleted Tuesday, September 24. by the
arrival in New York of its held repre
sentative, A. L. Westgard. Since June
11 the “Pathfinder "40” engaged in this
-work has been driven from New York
to Seattle, thence down to San Fran
cisco and east from the Golden Gates,
with side trips to Yellowstone National,
Glacier National Park and Denver, a
total so far of about 10,000 miles.
With the exception of a two days’
run from Cheyenne to Denver and back,
in order to include that important loop
in the itinerary of the forthcoming
“Overland Trail,” the return trip from
San Francisco was made very Quickly
through Sacramento, Reno, Salt Lake
< 'tty. Cheyenne. Omaha and Chicago.

Gets Valuable Data.

Westgard traveled over the Platte Riv
er Route, taking complete note- of
mileages, road conditions and all other
neccrsary information for the tourist
via North Platte. Grand Island and
Fremont, Nebr., to Omaha: thence
across lowa via Denison. State Center,
Marshalltown and Cedar Rapids to
Clinton. Crossing the Mississippi river
from Clinton, lowa, to Fulton, 111., the
"Overland Trail” continues - over north
ern Illinois by practically an airline
through Dixon, Rochelle and Geneva to
Chicago.
En route back from Chicago, Mr.
Westgard traveled through South Bend,
Ind., Cleveland, Ohio, and Erie, Pa., to
Westfield, N. Y., where he turned al
most directly east through Mayville,
Jamestown, Salamanca and Olean to
Hornell, Corning, Elmira and Bingham
ton. The remainder of the trip was
across the Catskills, and along the
Hudson river through Kingston, New
burgh, Suffern, Nyack and Tarrytown.
After a very brief fest, Mr. Westgard
turned again toward Southern Califor
nia by the "'Midland Trail,” the last one
of the three transcontinental routes be
ing laid out this year by the American
Automobile association. This route is
being covered through Philadelphia,
Pittsburg, Columbus, Indianapolis. St.
Louis. Kansas City, Colorado Springs
and Salt Lake city to Angeles,
which will be reached about Decem
ber 1.

LONDON AUTO BUSES
EARN MORE MONEY
THAN TROLLEY CARS
The wonderful strides made by the
London motor bus service in late years
have ceased to occasion comment from
foreign power wagon enthusiasts, who
seem to view its progress in a sort of
“I told you so” spirit. Yet. to those un
familiar with the situation abroad, the
actual figurespire really amazing.
Since 1903, when thirteen machines
were in operation, London’s motor bus
service has expanded by leaps and
bounds, until there are now more than
2,100 busses in actual use. in the last
year or more, says The Power Wagon,
it has been encroaching - upon the field
heretofore practically monopolized by
the tramways, with results that are
causing great alarm among the tram
way officials. As a matter of fact, they
are witnessing a constantly increasing
rate of reduction in their receipts, while
the motor bus service continues to ex
pand both physically and financially.
The following figures, compiled from
official statistics of the London County
council and the London General Omni
bus Company, serve to show the change
brought about in the last year:

TO CONSTRUCT 11,500
AUTOS DURING 1913
George E. Daniels, vice president and
general manager of the Oakland Motor
Car Company, announces that the plans
for next season call for the building of
11,500 Oakland cars, and that this will
necessitate a number of factory addi
tions. These will be started at once. A
total of 300,000 square feet of space will
be added.
The carrying out of this program
means that the well-known Pontiac
concern becomes the world’s seventh
producer of high-grade automobiles.
Those in the trade have watched with
interest the phenomenal growth of this
company. The season just closed has
been a wonderful one—the Oakland
proving very popular in important cen
ters like New York, Chicago, Boston,
Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Detroit, Oma
ha, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta
and other points.
“The Oakland came into its own,”
said Vice President Daniels, recently.
"The car has a firm foundation for its
popularity and ability. It Is today one
of the standard motor cars. And this
popularity is bound to grow in the
future. The 1913 line warrants the
making of this statement.

and Office.
The new building now in course of
erection at the plant of the Goodyear
Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, Ohio,
is indicative of the wonderful progress
made by this firm in the last year or
two. in addition to the buildings re
cently completed, other structures, to
accommodate the increased business,
are being built. A new office building
to find room for 500 employees, and to
relieve the congestion in the old office
building, has been occupied recently.
Tile new building is an imposing struc
ture and lias been built as a wing on
the east side of the old structure. It
measures 126x50 feet. The executive
quarters occupying the ground floor of
the main building are finished in quar
tered oak panel, and the president’s of
fice and directors’ room is . - iished in
nated throughout by the indirect light
solid mahogany. The building is illmni

Adjacent to the new administration
building is a new two-story garage, 143
x 56 feet, almost completed, witli an ex
tra story at the front of the building to
be used as an assembly room.
The structural iron work of the new
No. 6 building has almost been com
pleted. It will measure 403 feet long
by 80 feet wide, and will be six stories
being made for a new five-story build
liigh with a basement. Excavations are
Ing measuring 250 feet by 60 feet, and
an extension 325 feet by 40 feet is being
made to building No. 14. These three
buildings are expected to be completed
by the end of the year. They will be
utilized to meet the increased demand
for automobile tires and the capacity of
the plant will be brought to 8,000 auto
mobile tire casings a day.
