National Laying Contest at Missouri
Experiment Station
MOUNTAIN GROVE. MO.
The manner and magnitude in which this great laying contest
• has been carried on makes it of more than usual interest to all poul
try raisers. The contest is to continue for one
year. The eleventh month has passed with Sep
tember. Each pen contains five females, either
hens or pullets. These layers nave been furnish
ed by poultrymen in different parts of the coun
try. Some remarkable records have been made.
By the report we learn that August has been an
extremely hot month at the station and many of
the hens were in full moult, cutting down the
production ot eggs very materially. In spite of
this there have been, however, some great in
dividual records. A White Plymouth Rock hen
laid 29 eggs in 31 days, which makes her total
for the ien months 237 eggs, and she has two
months yet. in which to complete her record, and
tell whether she can be passed by other hens
which are but little behind her.
This hen has consumed 48 pounds of dry
mash. 32 pounds of grain. 2 pounds of grit, hone
and shell. The best pen record to date is a pen of Rose Comb Rhode
Island Reds, which laid 899 eggs, or an average of 180 eggs per
hen.
The best len pen records are
as follows:
R. C. R. I. Reds. Missouri, 899 eggs;
S. C. White Leghorns, California, 871;
White Wyandottes, Arkansas, 858; S. C.
White Leghorns, Georgia, 856; B. Ply
mouth Rocks. Illinois, 843; Blaek Or
pingtons. Indiana. 823; S. C. Rhode
Island Reds, Virginia. 810; Silver Wyan
dottes, lowa, 793; R. C. Brown Leg
horns, Missouri. 790; R. C. R. I. Reds,
lowa, 782.
Fourteen individual hen* have laid
more than 200 eggs in the ten months
with records as follows:
White Rock, 237 eggs; Barred Rock,
216; R. C. R. I. Red, 215; S. C. R. I.
Red, 213; S. C. White Ixsghorn, 209;
Ancona, 209; White Orpington, 206; 8.
C. White Leghorn, 206; S. C. Brown
Leghorn, 203; S. C. White Leghorn, 203;
Barred Rock, 202; Barred Rock, 201;
Silver Wyandotte, 200; R. C. R. I. Red,
200.
Great Records.
These are great records, and it will
be noticed that the old reliable Barred
Plymouth Rock family had three hens
in the 200 egg list, which is more than
any other variety could show. To be
taken, of course, for what it is xvorth,
but theso are mighty good records when
we stop to consider that the average
farm hen lays but about 80 eggs. S. C,
Rhode island Reds have made the best
average so far; 60 hens average 139
eggs each.
Ten Black Orpingtons, 137 eggs; 10
Black Leghorns, 137; 30 Silver Wyan
dottes, 136; 20 White Orpingtons, 135;
30 Buff Orpingtons, 132; 30 R. C. Reds,
132; 20 S. C. Black Minorcas, 132; 90
S. C. White Leghorns, 127; 20 Anconas,
122: 20 S. C. Brown Leghorns, 116; 15
H. c. White Leghorns, 115; 70 Barred
Plymouth Rocks, 113; 10 Indian Runner
Ducks, 111; 30 White Plymouth Rocks,
107.
And so on down the line. Os course,
in studying these averages one must
take into consideration tlie number of
liens In making the a.verage, and this
is but a ten months' record. The hens
have 61 days left in which to complete
their year’s record. The director calls
attention to the fact that these averages
include all hens of the variety named,
good bad and indifferent. Several hens

have never laid an egg. which, of
course, cuts the average down mighty
fast. Preparations are being made for
next year’s contest to commence No
vember 15. They can only accommo
date a certain number of pens. I think
ft is five pens of each variety, many of
which are already filled. There are va
cancies of one pen of each of the fol
lowing varieties: R. C. White Leg

Leghorns, White Orpingtons. Black Or

Buff Wyandottes, Partridge Wyan

Wyandottes. All other varieties have
enough to fill their class. It Is the in
tention to have-the same number of en
tries in each class or variety, so that if
the above mentioned varieties do not
fill they will be barred entirely from
the contest.
Prizes for Winner*.
Cash prize* will be offered as follows:

fourth best pen record, $lO.
Best indixddual record, S2O: second
best individual record. sls; third best
individual record, $10; fourth best in
dividual record, $5.
One hundred dollars in cash is offered
for the best variety record, divided as
follows: $5 for best pen record in each
of the 20 varieties. •
The National Black Langshan club
offers a silver cup for the best pen rec
ord, and a cup for the best hen. or pullet
record.
The American White Orpington club
offers a fine silver cup for the best lay
ing pen of White Orpington* owned by
a club manager. Other clubs have sig
nified their willingness to offer prises
on their varieties.
This contest means much to the state
of Missouri and the entire country.
People are becoming alive to the fact
that there is much in breeding for eggs,
and that some families or strains of a
variety are much better layers than are
others of the same variety. So that it
is really more in the strain after all
than the variety. Let the poultryman
select the chicken that he admires the
most and feels will suit his tastes and
go to trapnestlng for eggs, getting them
better year by year.
