132 NAILS FOUND
IN THE STOMACH
OF HUMAN OSTRICH
PITTSFIELD, MASS.. Nov. I.—Luke
Parsons, the "human ostrich,” was oper
ated on in a Pittsfield hospital, and the
surgeon removed 132 nails, two keys, a
button hook and a partly digested three
inch iron spike from his stomach and in
testines. A nail punctured the abdo
men and caused peritonitis.
Parsons has hail a craving for metal
since he accidentally swallowed some
shingle nails ten years ago. Jackknives,
spikes and can openers were regarded by
him as a special delicacy. Last week he
had symptoms of Indigestion. He had had
attacks before, but always found a rem
edy by eating pieces of tin, a button
hook or some keys. When he applied to
the hospital for treatment he said his

Tip Goes Out That City Will
Be as Wide Open as Before
Rosenthal Slaying.
NEW YORK. Nov 1.- Hordes of gam
blers who were frightened away from the
city by the exposures following the mur
der of Herman Rosenthal are coming
back to the city with the expectation that
gambling will be as wide open as before
the police scandal.
It is said that certain police officials,
feeling that all that was demanded by the
people of New York was that Becker
should be sent to the death house in Sing
Sing, have let it be known among the
members of the gambling fraternity who
remained in the city during the Becker
trial, that the lid was to be lifted. The
word was sent abroad and those who
make their living from "easy marks.” are
rushing back to the city as fast as boat
and train can carry them.
Information concerning the “tip" sent
out reached District Attorney Whitman
today, and it was said that he would
rush the trials of the four gun men
charged with the actual murder of Ro
senthal so that he might more thorough
ly investigate the alliance said to still ex
ist between the gamblers and police offi
cials. From an inside source, it was
learned that Whitman now has sufficient
data to enable him to bring about even
a more startling exposure of corruption
in the police department than was dis
closed by the Becker trial.
