Practical Notes
Save all the immature heads of cab
bage for the poultry' next winter, when
place for future use. They are too val
uable to waste.
other green food Is scarce. Also save
any other waste vegetables. They will
all come in handy when the ground !•
covered with snow and the chickens are
confined in their houses.
Commence now to train the birds in
tended for the exhibition pens at next
winter's shows. Treat them in such a
way that they will be tame and tracta
ble, and a little later handle them, every
few days, teachin, them to pose. Prop
er training goes a long way toward
winning the blue ribbons.
The farmer who says "hens are a
nuisance” is the one who gives them
j no attention except when taking a nice
I bunch to market. The check he gets
I for* them is 75 per cent clear profit
i though he may not realize it. There U
more profit in a load of poultry than In
a load of any other product of the
’ farm.
As usual at about this time of year,
there is a reported shortage of the
turkey crop of the country, and it is
. predicted that the Thanksgiving turkey
I will be a very scarce commodity. This
report is circulated annually, but some.
! how we always notice that when the
time comes the turkeys arrive from
r somewhere.
Eervybody can not succeed with poul
try, any more than everybody can suc
ceed in <jjher vocations. Study the ben
and always keep both eyes open. Fool
I but very little with scrub and sick hens.
Deal honestly, advertise judiciously and
: after becoming well acquainted with
■ one's self, then study the market con-
1 ditlons. Make hens profitable. This
may mean a god deal, but without It no
one can hope to succeed. If new in the
business, don't fall to ask questions,
feed liberally.
