CHICAGO., Dec. 6.—Vice President
elect Thomas R. Marshall said today m
would be ready and waiting lor his in
auguration on March 4, despite the
weather or the proposed switching of
the day for the inaugural fet<
“You can’t very well have the bridal
breakfast six weeks after the c -re
mony,” said Governor Marshall. “It

H. Edwards, one of the oldest citizens
of St. Charles, is of the opinion that
the world is growing worse. Judge
Edwards is 80 years old, and for the
first time in his life he say’s the worst
trick ever played on a man was played
on him the other night when a sneak
thief entered his chicken house and
stole iti of the best chickens.
The thief did not stop at this and let
the matter rest, but replaced the fat.

of the fact that Charles H. Mayer,
Democrat, was elected to the circuit
bench in the November election, W. K.
Amick, Republican, refuses to turn over
the place to him. Judge Amick was
named by Governor Hadley when L. J.
, Eastin resigned two years ago. Eas
tin’s term would not have expired until
1914, and Amick contends he was named
to fill out that term.
HELPLESS MOTHERS
LISTEN TO SCREAMS
OF BURNING CHILDREN
PITTSBURG. Dec 6.—Unable to en
ter a burning barn, three frantic moth
ers were forced to remain outside and
listen to the screams of their dying
children and watch the flames which
slowly consumed their tiny bodies.
The dead are Mary Randa, 8; Lizzie
Sophan, 5, and John Chastey, 4. The
bodies were recovered today, and prep
arations for burial are being made.
CHARGES ARSON TRUST
CAUSED $500,000 FIRES
MADISON, WIS., Dec. 6. —State Eire
Marshal T. M. Purtell today announced
that he hail uncovered an arson trust,
which had been making the burning of
buildings tor profit a business. Purtell
went to Waukesha today, to get war
rants for the arrest of persons in tiiis
alleged ring, charging them with the
burning of the Spring City hotel, in
Waukesha. January 24, 1911.
Purtell charges that-the gang has de
stroyed property to the value of half, a
million dollars in this and other states.
