Practical Poultry Pointers
If layers are what you are needing,
this is the season to look out for the
pullets. Select the early maturing-' pul
lets if you want to get the persistent
layers. Mark them in some way or sep
arate them from the rest of the flock.
A pen of these early maturing pullets Is
worth dollars to the poultryman to
raise his next year’s flock from.
How do you clean your chickens for
the table? Do you use soap? Nothing
like it. After the carcass has been
singed and before it Is cut up, take
some good white soap and a small hand
brush ahd th a pan of warm water soap
and scrub it thoroughly; after this,
rinse in two or three waters until the
soap has been all removed. You will be
surprised how dirty the wsrter is.
Success with poultry means: Just a
little more care in the feeding, just a
little more care in the housing of your
hens, just a little more attention to
their health. Give everything Just a
littie more attention than the average
man or woman would think was neces
sary—such treatment spell:: success.
“I do not know what is the matter
with my chickens. They mope around
in a listless manner, their heads are
pale and they are hardly able to walk.
1 know they have no lice* on them.”
This all sounds mighty nice, but in
nine, but in nine cases out of ten is not
the fact, for when a farmer or poultry
raiser describes his chickens as above
you can just bet your bottom dollar
that there are a lot of lice and mites
covering them. To the untrained eye
they are right hard to find, as they slip
out of sight so quickly when the feath
ers are opened up. Good, dry loam or
fine sand mixed with dirt, to which has
been added a little good lice powder
. makes a splendid dust bath to keep
within reach at all times. This will
help very materially In reducing the
crop of lice, but Where they get so fa
advanced as to make the fowls pale and
listless it is time more vigorous meth
ods should be used. Give each fowl a
thorough dusting with the lice powder
alone. This should be repeated once a
week until they are ousted.
G'-t rid of some of those old roasters

much your stock will be improved.
A gallon of coal oil, to which is added
one pint of crude carbolic acid, makes
an excellent spray for the poultry
house. If you have no spray pump use
a sprinkling can with a small sprinkler
top to if and go over the roosts and
side wails as far as you can reach
with it.
Boil up a lot of small Irish and sweet
potatoes for the chickens once or twice
a week. Mix a little bran or cornmeal
with them and mash them up. A little
salt and pepper added will make a very
wholesome mash.
If your hens are laying well keep up
the supply of feed in sufficient quanti
ties to enable them to continue rigid
along, not forgetting a change once in
awhile. Keep good sharp grit at their
command and charcoal for their health.
If you think you can keep chickens
with a profit on a small plot of ground
by going out once a day and throwing
them a little corn <nd rushing bnck into
the house, you will wake up some fine
morning to find that you are on the
wrong road.
Have a well defined aim in your
breeding of poultry. If it is eggs you
want, breed the egg types in your hens,
no matter if you are not breeding the
small egg varieties. Breed the longer
bodied hens, those rather low benind,
those with large limber combs. If you
are wanting to produce early broilers,
select the quick maturing stock. If
roasters the large deep-breasted type.
Whatever you do. have an aim and
work to it.
Do not use ashes under the roosts. It
is not good, for the health of the fowls
and makes the manure ’lose tts
strength. The best absorbent to use
under the roosts, on the ground or
dropping boards is plain dry loam.
Wh< n cleaned out with the droppings :t
makes a valuable compost.
Do not be all the time hunting forth?
best fowl on earth.” Almost any good
thoroughbred fowl, if handled accord
ing to its natural tendencies, will give
you good results. Go at it with the
idea that you have the best there is, and
with your best efforts it will be about
the best on earth.
