Urges Study of Bible.
“There are too many dust-cox
Bibles in this country,” declared \\., j I
all. "The little attention paid to Biblel
study is responsible for the groidn I
infidelity and wickedness in this eoun. I
try. The Bible should be a part of the I
course in every public school.”
J. C. Shaughnessy, of st. Louis M . I
ganlzer for the National Barbers union I
took up the opposition at once. x ' I
"There are portions of the Bibk" h, I
said, "that are unfit to be sent through I
the mails, let alone be taught in the I
schools. It is absurd to suggest that I
it should be taught in the schools, I

It is welding the church with the state' I
an idea foreign to the American sys’ I

Sees Religious Dictation.
“Why, there are hundreds of ehilJ
dren sending their children to the
lie schools who do not believe in t] ;s
Bible, said P. J. Conlon, vice president
of the International Association of Ma
chinists, of Washington. "Some be:i -v 9
in the Talmud, others in the Kn.
others in nothing except the spirit of
human kindness. Why should the pub
lie school system dictate the religion of 1
their school children?”
Others were milder in their op r >
tlon to the idea, but none the less firm. ;
Among those who went on record as
opposed to teaching the Bible in the!
schools, basing their objections on a
plea for less sectarianism and in a,
lute religious freedom for every > :ie, ■
were Ben Giles, of Cedartown, Ga (1.
